BBC PMQ's on 4 channels at once!

Maybe this has been covered elsewhere but did anyone notice that today's PM Questions (12noon) was being covered live on Sky News, Bloomberg, BBC News24 and BBC Parliament! Is there such a need for duplication on 4 Channels? In particular do BBC News24 need to duplicate what is already been shown on BBC Parliament except in time of great national interest? In any case surely everyone who has BBCNews24 also has BBC Parliament?! Any comments on this?

it's not really much of a big deal?

presumably most people never watch BBC parliament, but sometimes there's enough going on to maybe bringing it to a wider audience.

    You missed BBC2!:D

Well it pretty well has to be on BBC Parliament as that's what the channel is for. It is on News 24 because it is a major event taking place but there is always the option for them to go off to cover something else if this is warranted. And it is on BBC2 as part of a programme dedicated to discussion and analysis of political matters, and also to give non-digital viewers the chance to see it.

I don't see the need for it on N24, especially when BBC Parliament is usually on the next channel up on the list (based on Sky and Freeview). All they need to do is show the first 2 minutes, and put up a banner "CONTINUING COVERAGE ON BBC PARLIAMENT"

    Just my view...

But given that this event often makes the headlines, it surely doesn't make sense for a news channel not to be there for viewers to follow it live. And if viewers had to retune to BBC Parliament, they would then be out of touch with any other breaking news which might occur which News 24 might want to leave PMQs to cover, or quite possibly show a caption or split screen pictures keeping viewers abreast of the other story whilst staying with PMQs.

It's only half an hour a week and I really don't see what the problem is. There are quite a number of occasions when chunks of ministerial statements and important debates are shown on the news channels, because they're the most significant event going on at the time.

By the way it is also on Radio Five Live. ;)

Yes it has, there have been a number of threads in the past specifically covering (and answering) exactly this issue from a BBC perspective.

As for the other broadcasters, it is a free world, Sky News and Bloomberg are (and indeed should be) free to carry whateber coverage they deem fit.

Point taken. Only raising the issue for discussion. Does seem that BBC covering it on 3 channels is a bit much! Can't think of a major sporting event recently that BBC covered live on 3 channels simultaeously! If they did this I think there would be more than a few complaints!

It might happen - indeed it may well have already. If the BBC were showing uninterrupted coverage of a sporting event on their interactive channels and there was also coverage on a mainstream channel, or even just a magazine type programme dealing with sporting matters for a more general audience rather than the sporting enthusiast, that programme might well also carry coverage. If this event was of significant interest it might also be shown for a while on News 24.

Not exactly the same coverage though (as would have been pointed out in those earlier threads).

BBC Parliament - constant streaming, no commentary, no analysis.

BBC News24 - rolling news channel, so would cut away should another story require it, also would have specific commentary/analysis tailored for a rolling news channel (shortish segments, no in-depth analysis or interviews).

The Daily Politics - political magazine programme (daily0 with pre-PMQ discussion, and post-PMQ analysis, complete with a viewers' Perception Panel (where there is later analysis), and discussion with representatives from the three main parties, all in a 90min programme.

Each programme is different, and is aimed at a different audience.
