Shopto.net credit card issues?

I was on HotUKDeals a few weeks ago and a few people were talking about being victims of credit card fraud after using Shopto. I'd never used the site at that point, but a couple of weeks ago I bought my first game from there. I tried to use my credit card yesterday and it was being repeatedly declined, so I called the card company and they'd blocked it because someone had been using it to try and buy loads of National Express tickets.

No fraudulent transactions actually got through, and it could just be a coincidence, but it seems odd that I've been online shopping for years and 2 weeks after using Shopto, some scammer is trying to use my card details. Anyone else had a problem with that site?

I haven't had any problem, and I just checked my bank account to make sure

There's a big discussion of it going on on their forums: http://forum.shopto.net/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=5278

I'm not sure what to make of it, but I think I might call up my bank and get a new card anyway... better safe than sorry.

Funnily enough I've just had a card changed because someone had been trying to get flights with Ryanair and O2 top up cards but the bank stopped them before they got anything.

I use shopto and tbh I don't think they are to blame. I hadn't used them for a couple of month before it happened. The bank seem to think it would come from somewhere like Amazon or Play, where they store card numbers.

I'd not heard about this, but my card details were used back in May.

Might well be a bit careful in future of using them in the future.

I've had tonnes of trouble registering cards with them in the past but i've not had any fraud trouble.

It's a pain because they do offer fantastic prices but they do come across as a really amateur operation at times.

If you are worried about any future problems, you can email them and ask them to delete your details from their database, they done that for me before.

I don't want to give out the wrong impression, because I have no proof that it's related to Shopto. It could just be a coincidence. I just wanted to see if anyone else had been a victim of attempted fraud that they might be able to link to using the site. The fact that it's even being discussed elsewhere does set off alarm bells though.

I've got a Cahoot credit card that allows you to generate a new card number with its own credit limit (which I can choose) and CVV for each transaction, so if I buy from Shopto in future, I'm going to use that. Their prices are good, but I'm not risking it again!

Interesting thread that.

Personally, I've never had any problems with Shopto but from what I gather, they are saying that it was a UK wide issue and not just linked to them.

I have also just had to change my card details as £270 came out of my account for a "BT Bill". I disputed the transaction and my bank said I will get the moeny bank but it has been a long and inconviniant process. I use Shopto a fair bit

It's very difficult to pinpoint any fraudulent transaction to one retailer.

A lot of us have used ShopTo, and had fraudulent transactions, others have used ShopTo and not. You can probably replace the name ShopTo to any retailer, online or not and you'll get the same result.

The problem is, no one cares any more. I phoned my card company, was told they'd remove the transactions, stop the card and send a new one. I got my new card less than a week later, phoned the security check number to be greeted with an offer for security insurance, because the police no longer investigate fraudulent transactions. It was probably all salesman-talk, but I haven't had a police report to complete like I did when I had a similar situation 4 years ago.

From ShopTo's position - better for them to admit that there was a problem, than to carry on claiming it's not their fault, but something which is an integral part of their website - their checkout supplier.

Not happened to me, and my last transaction was for Ghostbusters. I think it might of been their card transaction supplier and not shopto directly?

This is old news and dates back to January and earlier.

Remember the 19,000 credit card details that were found through google? How many do you think they got and didn't post online? The problem is, most people assume that, because it happens after a recent purchase from an online store, that it is the store at fault.

People don't take into account that their details may have been in the hands these thieves for months. I know someone who had this happen after using Amazon on a card they hadn't used for a few month.

The problem lies with the gateway system being hacked, which means if you live in the UK and have used a CC online within the past 12months. You should really consider getting a replacement. There is absolutely no way to know whether you're card was compromised until someone uses the details and when you take into account that these people have tens of, even hundreds of thousands of UK CC details, it could take a few months to even use your details.

Is ShopTo at fault? Since it is happening to people who never used that store, I would have to say no.

well i am yet to use Shopto, but i had a transaction on my statement for £30 of vodafone top up that i didn't buy, so i think a tad unfair to blame shopto, but still....i am very nervous about online shopping now

Same here, I had two mysterious charges appear on my credit card bill - the first for £20 mobile phone credit and a second (£109-ish) for what appeared to be data acquisition services. This shortly after buying from Shopto.

Just out of interest, how many people have also used Play.com between now and January/February with the card that had mysterious charges?

Many people I know had this happen after using Play and none of them have ever shopped at ShopTo.

I dunno...?

I've suffered from some card fraud personally, but it was via a card attached to Play.com.

I'm a total Credit Card Tart, and have different ones scattered between various sites. The one attached to ShopTo has never had a single issue, but the one attached to Play.com was abused like there was no tomorrow.
Plus, I'm not the only one to be honest, as it's happened to quite a few people that I know.

There's a mass of people on this forum blaming Play.com actually! -

I am a member on the ShopTo Forum, and I'm noticing a lot of chat about this fraud thing. There's been a lot of mention towards 02 payments being charged to cards too, but to be honest, they look like they go back all the way to 2007 -

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...html?t=1143773

It seems kind of stupid to assume it's ShopTo causing all this, when their security is actually amazingly tight.
When you think about it, wouldn't it be so much easier for some grunt at Play.com or Amazon to sit there stealing card numbers, than it would be at a small company like ShopTo? Especially when you consider that 'hacking' ShopTo sounds virtually impossible.

Hey, I'm not blaming anyone. I obviously can't prove it's Play.com, Amazon or whoever, but I just think everybody needs to be a LOT more wary of the larger Online stores and not just attack the smaller ones.

I was contacted by my credit cards fraud team in May for a £1 charity donation that was trying to be put through on my card.

The only place I have used this credit card was to pay my council tax online and to buy the COD WAW map pack from the Playstation Store.

Just goes to show that criminals can get your details from anywhere.

Never had a problem and I would have no hesitation in recommending ShopTo.net to anyone. Low prices, and fantastic delivery service (never had something NOT come the next day).
