HD question

So i bought myself a 320gb PS3 today and when i opened it I found it only had a Standard AV cable. I assumed being the 320GB it would come with a HD cable. Assumptions eh?

Anyway I was going to go to Argos to buy a HDMI cable tomorrow as I cant really be arsed waiting for one to be delivered. I was going to buy http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...ext%3EHDMI.htm I was just wondering if anybody knows if that one would be ok? Looking to play in 1080.

Also it came with a USB cable (usb connection at both ends) anybody know what its for?

Cheers

Do NOT buy that cable, it's far too short and way too expensive. You should have one that is 1.5m or more unless you have the PS3 really close to the tv.

You can also only play in 1080p with those games that actually support it, which are few and far between. The Lego Harry Potter games and others in the Lego series play in 1080p as does Gran Turismo, but I've not come across too many others.

The USB cable is for charging the controller.

I bought a 2m from Home Bagains for £2.99 on Wednesday for my 360. If you have a shop like that, go there.

Point taken on the length , although it will fit I may look for a longer one, I don't have much of a choice though, I have Argos and Maplin and I don't want to wait for delivery. I have a localish Game but they are never cheap.

Edit : They have this http://www.game.co.uk/en/gameware-un...entifier=21356

You probably know this already (so please don't take offence if you do!), but the HDMI connection is digital, meaning that it'll either work, or it won't.

Which may sound a little odd, but essentially means that a cheap cable from a pound shop will function just as well as a fancy piece of wiring with gold-plated connectors from an overpriced specialist emporium.

Just saying, to save those that might not be fully aware from getting suckered in by the promise of "greater sound clarity and richer flesh tones" that some of the ridiculously priced cables out there claim to offer.

yea I know I just don't want to get home and find I have bought the wrong thing altogether. I have never used a HDMI cable before just want to make sure.

I know you said you didn't want to wait for delivery but for these prices you'd be daft to pay more instead of waiting a day. I ordered one like these off amazon and got it next day.

A cheap HDMI cable from the supermarket will do the same job as a far more (often ridiculous) priced one. As for gaming in 1080P, Yeah your Ps3 will auto detect your tv and set it to this but most Ps3 games are 720P but that's good enough. Enjoy your gaming

You can force the PS3 to output all at 1080p (though this would upscale games internally rather than letting your TV do it) by unchecking 720p from the compatibility output list.

The only thing to look out for is whether the cable is HDMI 1.3 compliant, but this is only an issue if you wish to play 3D games/movies. If you don't care about 3D then any HDMI cable will do.

You also need a so-called "1.3" ["High Speed"] cable for guaranteed 1080p support as well as for 3D. Other cables won't be certified to handle the increased bandwidth used for 1080p or 3D. You may get lucky, you may not.

However, version numbers are only actually really relevant for the interface, not the cable.

Calling a cable "1.3" or "1.4" is just marketing BS.

HDMI cables are simply "Standard" or "High Speed" [with v1.4 of the spec. also introducing with or without Ethernet for each type].

The official word on HDMI cables...

Cables are instead rated by their performance capabilities. There are five HDMI cable types to choose from:

Standard HDMI Cable - Designed to handle most home applications, the Standard HDMI Cable can reliably transmit 1080i or 720p video plus surround audio.

Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet - Same baseline performance as the Standard HDMI Cable, plus a dedicated Ethernet channel for Internet connection sharing and device networking.

Standard Automotive HDMI Cable - Designed for internal cabling of motor vehicles equipped with onboard HD video systems.

High Speed HDMI Cable - Designed to handle video resolutions of 1080p and beyond, including advanced display technologies like 3D and 4K.

High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet - Same baseline performance as the High Speed HDMI cable, plus a dedicated Ethernet channel for Internet connection sharing and device networking.

Each of these cable types should be clearly marked with a distinctive logo, as shown below...

This is a good cable: 3m, High Speed with Ethernet, gold plated... only £4.

Poundland sell HDMI cables for £1.

I can't tell any difference between those and ones I've bought for £4.
