Castlevania: Judgment - Wii

That spelling doesn't look right. Judgement should have an extra E in it imho.

Anyway, while you lot are all focused on the Wii U (as am I to be fair, looking awesome!), some of us are still grabbing Wii bargains. I picked this up very cheaply yesterday, mindful of some fairly critical reviews at release. But as a lover of all things Gothic and Castlevania, I handed my scraps of moth eaten change over and dashed home for a fix.

I am really pleasantly surprised. Not only is it a really pretty and fast game, but it's a surprisingly fun and accessible one too. A lot of hoo-hah was made over the costume designs in some reviews, comparing the fetishistic designs of Judgement to past games in the series. But that's missing the point. You can't lambast a game for taking its own art direction, even one based on a well known series. It looks brilliant to me, so I won't get on that bandwagon. If it had looked like shit then I would have complained.

There's a few modes that take their inspiration from Soul Calibur, and that's a good thing. There's a Story mode, Arcade mode, and also a "Castle" mode, where like in SC you progress through a dungeon like maze by beating enemies under certain criteria. This is a really fun mode, and lets you explore the abilities of each character.

The game plays like a cross between SC and Tekken, and also Dreamcast classic Powerstone, insofar as you can run freely around arenas in order to get better positions, grab items and dodge your opponent. This aspect works really well imho, and once you get into it it makes the game feel more unique and dynamic. Much nicer than a 2D plane, at least in this game I reckon.

One tip - this is designed for the classic controller. You can use a remote/nunchuck combo, but I wouldn't. It's an old school beat-em-up. It also works with a Gamecube controller too.

Anyone else a fan? There aren't a lot of beat-em-ups on the Wii, but this is worth your time imo.

I've played some of it and I remember quite enjoying it, I may have to go back to it to form a proper opinion as my memory is a bit hazy. Soul Calibur Legends is another one I quite enjoyed, I seem to connect these two games for some reason.

It's pretty good. It's not as deep as some fighters, there only being a limited roster of moves and combos. But what there is works well and is fun, especially in local multiplayer. I'm surprised they didn't do a sequel really, as there was plenty there begging to be built on.

Anyway, back to your Wii U...

The game has lovely presentation too, really nice graphics. Why did people hate on it so much?
