YLOD, new PS3 and the data from my old Playstation 3
My old Playstation 3 (40GB) is suffering from the 'yellow light of death', when I press the power button, the green light is quickly followed by a yellow one then a red flashing light.
I decided to purchase a new PS3 (160GB) and would like to transfer all my data (saves, trophies etc..) from my old Playstation 3 onto it. Is there a temporary fix for my old Playstation 3 so that I can turn it on, connect it to my new PS3 via a cable and transfer the data? Or is it possible to place the Hard Drive from the old Playstation 3 inside a HD caddie I have and connect it through the USB slot on my new PS3 then copy the saved data from it? Many thanks guys! |

Trophys will be fine as they are stored on PSN, not your PS3.
Everything else however will be lost unless you can get your old PS3 working. You can get a heat gun and reflow it or pay for a shop to do this (usually about 30ish quid). |

If you are competent with a screwdriver and heat gun you can reflow your own PS3 console. I have helped a pal do it twice. Each time his console worked for about 8 weeks before going again, after the 3rd time he bought a Slim. Doing this should give you enough time to do a console to console data migration with a network cable which will move most if not all the data over.
Some fixes may last longer or be permanent but if one of my consoles went I wouldnt want to trust it. Buy a new machine, transfer the data and then get rid of the old machine - only way to be sure. Its such a shame you cannot swap a HDD between two machines as it can create so much hassle for the users. |
