Does that matter, it could be hours/days?

Putting down the cover just puts it to sleep.

No damage being done, no need to worry. You're not meant to actually fully turn it off and on every time, there's no need, no point.

I never turn mine off. Just sleep it with the button or cover.

I've had an iPad 1 since they were first available and it has never been switched off, just standby. Impressively the battery is still in great condition.

Unlike my iPhone which I routinely charge overnight every night so it very rarely gets turned off, the new iPad doesn't need recharging so often so I turn it off completely overnight and also when I'm at work (it stays home being a wifi only model) but when I am at home it sits next to me on the sofa and I pick it up every few minutes, so just use the cover to put it to sleep.

In "sleep mode" (press the button or use the cover) the processor is mostly stalled and the screen is off. I guess that the processor will still wake at times to check for events but the power consumption (and thus heat) is totally neglible!

I never turn my iPad off - I just charge it again after a few days when it gets low.

What have you got? I've tried five or six Android tablets and all of them have drained on standby at about ten times the speed my iPad does. On standby I lose around 10% of charge overnight on my Onda Vi40 Elite - and that impressed me because usually it was more like 20% on other devices.

My iPad gets put to sleep and will still have a good chunk of charge if I leave it for a week.

I turn off syncing on both devices.

You not comparing like for like when it comes to batteries. A top of the range Android tablet will give you excellent battery time. My Xoom uses maybe 1 - 2 % whilst in sleep mode overnight. You cannot expect a cheapish Chinese import to have the same battery performance as an iPad or top of the range Android tablet.

Most people's batteries drain in standby because of the apps that they install, they do not realise that even though synch may be disabled in standby these apps are still running in the background draining the battery.

I just put my ipad to sleep by putting the cover down. I've had mine for a few months now and have only switched it off once.

You should restart it every now and then.

I leave mine on...same with my iPhone. The only time it's off is when the battery dies before I've plugged it in
I do switch them off and on again every few days though.

My Xoom is left on all day, but shut down at night. I also have the wifi set to turn off when the screen is off.

It's a HP touchpad - I can leave it on standby for days with no noticeable battery loss
