NewLucy Beale

Is anyone else really warming to NewLucy Beale?

When she first came in I was worried that it would be difficult to take to yet another recast in the show and her first few weeks were a bit shaky.

However since Ian's breakdown and now the scenes with Derek I'm really enjoying her presence. I now associate Hetti with the role, which is not something I thought I'd be saying just a few months after her arrival. Perhaps its having a distance from Lauren, Whitney and the Goons that is making her stand out for me.

Acting-wise I think she holds her own in scenes with more established characters and I enjoy watching her more than the other "youthful" characters.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes next for Lucy and how she will react to Ian's return. Perhaps a love interest in Joey Branning?

So well done Hetti Bywater!!

Nope. Still not liking her. She cowers and cringes away from people, doesn't look them in the eye, and breaks too easily. She's too fragile. The old Lucy was just a bitch and didn't give a flying f**k. I didn't like that scene today with Derek at the end of EE: old Lucy would have just told him to sod off and if he didn't go, she would have brained him. Also, when he said "Who're you going to call? Your dad? The police?" she would have just called Christian, who can knock Phil Mitchell on his ass and is a very tall, very broad, built-like-a-brick-plop-house sort of guy.

It's not Hetty's fault though: she was brought in for a reason, and TPTB must have wanted to make Lucy 'softer' than she used to be. So Hetty's doing an adequate job. I just don't believe that real Lucy would act like that though.

I think this is a result of her experiences, young kids are so cocksure of themselves whilst living at home not realising how much their parents shield them.

When she left Ian's she more than likely saw the things her father was trying to protect her from.

This.

I'd probably warm to Lucy if she was playing a brand new character but she's not.

We're supposed to believe that she is Lucy Beale when she is nothing like her. It's like a whole new character.

The scene at the end today made me cringe. There is no way that REAL Lucy would have simpered down so quickly, even by a bully like Derek. She'd have been a bit frightened but she wouldn't have let Derek know that. She'd have put a dam good fight and gave him a right gob full.

Exactly, there were times when Phil was man handling her when she was drunk and then though she was scared she never let it show. Lucy would always put on a front no matter what she was really feeling.

Precisely. She's always had her dad, brother, step mum(s) around but now she's completely on her own and vulnerable. I think the scenes where she spiked Alice and grassed up Derek were classic Lucy, but when on a 1-2-1 situation she realises there is no one there to defend her.

Hetti Bywater as Lucy Beale

I confess I am lovin' her @ the moment! Hetti has really settled into the Square & she does seem more grown-up from her predecessor (to be expected since time has passed! ) & as with Lauren, they have recast very well to portray a character now old enough to drink (legally ).

The moment I really switched on to Hetti/Lucy was a few weeks back when Lucy was out on the town with Lauren &, having a drunken argument in which Lauren unfairly lacerated her friend, Lucy didn't just leave her to the mercies of the City. She really tried to help with little thanks & I think it illuminated her character.

My only gripe: Hetti could do with a good feed!

Yeah that's basically it she couldn't have stayed a bitch forever because of 2 reasons.
1. Janine, there is only room for 1 evil bitch in the square.
2. Old Lucy was too hard to be a softer character.

Yeah they've moulded Lucy's character around Hetti now. It makes sense but everyone's right - the old Lucy wouldn't have accepted Derek's crap, not even at 16. I want to see her strength show through more!

Sorry OP but I think your in the minority. Hetti Bywater doesn't strike me as a great actress tbh and I think the Lucy recast is typical example of some of BK's failiures. He sacked a perfectly conpetant actress (using the flimsiest of excuses) and brought in a pretty person who can't really act just to sex the character up and give adolescants someone to lust over. I'll never forgive him for completely annihliating the Beale family.

I do like the new Lucy but I also agree that it is not Lucy's character to cower away from Derek like that, this of course is the writers fault and not Hetti's.

I was starting to like her until she turned into a bitch again. How many times are they gonna come close to making her nice and then deciding not to?

This.
I've seen some people say old Lucy was too one note but I'm finding new Lucy has about 2 faces: tears in her eyes and bitchy. All she seems to do is cry nowadays.
I thought she was good in the scenes with Lauren a few weeks ago but after that I've gone back to not really liking her, which is a shame. I just don't see her as Lucy because as los.kav said, old Lucy wouldn't have been afraid of Derek and would have called him a past it old thug or something and if she was afraid, she would have put on a front. Of course, that's not really Hetti's fault but I'm utterly sick of seeing Lucy run away from someone with tears in her eyes.

Hetti's a better actress than Melissa by miles. Melissa really couldn't act for toffee.

It may be possible that something really bad happened, something violent whilst she was away. And she was clearly traumatised by the Peter thing

I preferred the old Lucy, both in actress and character.

Having said that I think new Lucy is fine, I hate that they made her cower and cry about Derek last night (also hate that Tanya did the same a week or so ago) but thats really more of a problem with the Johnny/Ruby Allen story...oh sorry I mean Derek/Alice story where he tries to show he has changed at the start of every episode, fails and she storms off and then he gets 'revenge' on someone before starting all over again.
