Hello,

I've been considering getting a tablet for my husband as a wedding anniversary present, and have come across this one for £99. Could anybody please advise if it's any good?

He'd mainly use it for watching movies and playing games.

Unfortunately not. Ideally I would like to get one of those, but it's not really an option at the moment.

Would the Gemini one be ok just as a basic one? We both have iPhones and a laptop, so it would be more of a luxury to have a tablet, but not a neccessity. Also hubby isn't the most delicate of people (the words bull and china shop spring to mind ) so I wouldn't want to spend a huge amount of money on one, knowing that there is a chance it will end up broken in six months time!

It's a bit of a bugbear of mine when people ask questions like this and there's at least one suggestion of getting something at a much higher price. It may well be that the OP only has a limited budget to spend, so recommending a higher price item isn't really helping.

But it's just me being a pain, so I don't mean to offend anyone [/rant]

Anyway OP, here's one from eBuyer which is actually £20 quid cheaper with a fairly similar spec.

Ooh, thank you for this! And yes, you're right, if I could afford to spend more, then I would.

Are these ok to watch movies on? Hubby currently watches things on his tiny iPhone screen, which I don't think can be very good for his eyes, hence my thought of getting him a tablet.

While it did happen to be double the price, it is the cheapest big brand tablet (eg. reputable, not just a shell company, customer support, guarantee) and the cheapest one with Android Market that is sold. If I'd came in and recommended an iPad or a Transformer I'd see where your coming from.

Assuming you convert your own DVD rips or pirate movies yes, if he watches them on Netflix, LoveFilm or Sky Go or has bought them on iTunes no.

It should be absolutely fine for watching movies on. I once had a crappy tablet with a resistive screen that i picked up for £40 odd quid. It had a terrible spec but it still managed to play a good selection of video files quite well, so this one should certainly have no real problems.

eBuyer are fine to order from as well - i use them quite a lot. Go through Quidco to get some cashback as well - not sure how much it'll be, but might be worth it

Actually, I think he watches them directly on websites, like youtube. I'm not very savvy with it all to be honest. Do these things have an equivalent to iTunes etc?

The only thing I would add is a lot of these cheap tablets have resistive screens which makes using them really annoying at times. I've owned a couple of cheap tablets and one had a real crappy resistive screen, the other was OK just.

You might want to see if you can actually try one out first, if the tablet is not going to be used for a lot of say web surfing and more as a media player then a crappy touch screen is not such an issue.

That's very true, but the one on eBuyer is capacitive.

If you want to play media, I bought a used 10" Advent Vega for £75 which looks as good as new. Took about 20 minute to load a custom ROM (most of the ones on ebay have already been updated with a custom ROM). Fairly responsive and can play back just about any format of video. Not bad for playing games and plenty of other uses as well.

Haha, I've already spent a fortune on him besides the tablet, think I might use the 20 quid to treat myself!

Currys are now doing a £99 Android tablet that gets some pretty good reviews ......
