Well he's been going 21 years and has a very thriving business.

I now have 8 Zebra danios with two albino danios, small but lively swimmers. One question.

Should the tank lighting be on 24 hours day even in the daytime?

Depends on the type of lighting. I have two lights, a White day light, and a Blue night light on my tanks., and just switch between the two.

With one light it's best though to turn it off overnight, if you are in to allow the fish some natural darkness. If you have two light sources on yout tank then try to get one for night time, one fore day time.

No, about 8 hours a day or you'll get too much algae. Fish in the wild have a night-time dim period too.

Thanks, I have been leaving it on 24/7, the tank has two lights one white and a less bright light but I discovered how to turn one off, so I'll turn both off at night.

again , it depends , i have mine on from 6 or 7 in the morning till 10 at night and no algae build up whatsoever , lots of trial and error involved , the one big thing is keeping the ammonia and nitrites at zero

A fine community tank in my opionion would hold
6 x Rummynose Tetras
6 x Pentazona Barbs (like Tiger barbs but not agressive)
1 Bristlenose Catfish (the best way to keep your tank and glass algae free)
Maybe 1 show fish - your decision

I've had no problems with my swordtails or guppies and the fighter...they get on fine!

They've been together for over a year now and never once have I seen the fighter go for them.

I didnt mean all at once - introduce them over a period of a few weeks and it should be fine.

Maybe reduce the number I suggested by 2 but I've a similar size tank...maybe slightly bigger...but never had any issues with overcrowding.

I don't have any algae problems, a single Garra Rufa has kept my tank clean. But what really keeps algae down also depends on where you site the tank. Fish tanks are best kept away from direct sunlight.

Plastic? Oh well thats ok then!

Seriously? Why do people think its ok to have a goldfish in a tiny bowl with no filtration? Then people clean the entire thing out, gravel included and say "well its survived ok"
Yeah it may have, but i bet its not a very nice survival!

He may have been in business 21 years because people take what he says as gospel!

I have pointed out all these things to him but as he says, his business and he can do what he likes. He's inspected by the Council for his licence to sell livestock and they seem happy and must have seen the piles of bowls that he has.

I think this can be an area chris where how long you have been in the business isnt that relevant. Hes been keeping fish his way for over 20 years? My father has kept fish nost of his live and hes always keeping up to date with the new things and adjusting the types of fish he keeps and how many. I think if he kept his fish how he did when he was a kid they would most likely die.

Im sure the fish in that mans shop look great but have you considered why? Our pets at home has lovely looking goldfish is a small tank but as they always tell everyone, they are good sellers so each fish only spends a few weeks in the small tank. If someone was to buy 2 goldfish for a bowl, which your seller allows, they may be intending them to live there for life. So what happens when the fish get too big?

There is another point to I noticed in a place I go to that they state the water in their tanks is specially filtered to maintain water quality, hence the reason they are able to hold a large number of fish in a small tank.

It sounds like this dealer is purely motivated by profit and not caring about the fish once they leave his shop as they are no longer his problem, and it's the purchasers problem if they die.
