The Ice Warriors
As with the previous two stories, this one is extremely atmospheric, enhanced not only by the snowy setting but the operatic-style incidental music and the opening of each episode.
Out of the two Ice Warrior stories during this Era, I prefer this one because of that. It's a shame about the two missing episodes as a lot of the main introduction to Varga and his crew are lost. I also like the battle going on between Clent and Penley and also Clent's over-reliance on computer's which The Doctor takes an instant dislike too. I will also concede this isn't one of Victoria's better stories as she spends most of it scared half witless as prisoner of the Ice Warriors. Jamie doesn't fare that much better as he takes a back seat the majority of the time. However, it still is another excellent story in Season Five which at Six Episodes I don't think it sags as much as other stories of this length.

I find this one a bit hard to follow because of the missing episodes (The Reign of Terror is another one that is seriously hobbled by having chunks missing at just the wrong moment). Not got round to the soundtrack CD of it, and maybe that will help things along. I rather like the story in principle: the "old building" set, the space-age costumes, Victoria in the ice corridors. I probably wouldn't be happy to be able to give marks out of ten to this, as it's a bit ofa mystery to me.
Does anyone know if the missing episodes are likely to be cartoonenised for DVD? That would make things much easier to follow. |

The Crusade is a bit of a struggle, with alternate episodes on DVD or soundtrack CD (but I managed The Moonbase more easily). The Reign of Terror is killed stone dead by having 2 episodes filled in with one minute of narration on VHS. Might give Ice Warriors a go once again. |

I always thought that this one was just too generic. All of the other 'base under siege' type stories all have some little thing that distinguishes them or makes them memorable but not really this one. As a result, I regard it as the worst story of its season. To be honest, I find i ahve trouble gettign to the end of this one.
I never really understood the appeal of the Ice Warriors either, I have to say. |

As for The Ice Warriors themselves, the appeal for me is more in the later stories where they have some form of class structure such as The Ice lord, Grand Marshal/Commander etc. This story doesn't really have those really though ironically it's the best one to feature them.

Yeah, i guess their later stories gave them a bit more distinction and personality as a species, instead of them just being generic invaders. Curse of Peladon is a very good story. I've never liked that they were from Mars though. Okay, it was the 60s, all aliens were 'Martians' then, but even so - how unoriginal. And so improbable. |
