TV aerial for car

Anybody here had any joy getting a good DTV or UHF signal in the car?

I've got a TV built into the car stereo which comes with a fairly large portable aerial but I can't pick up jack shit with it.

you have horizontal and vertical signals from different transmittors

better with a dvd, or Sky GO on your mobile

There are a couple of reasons why TV reception in cars doesn't work well...

1. You are close to the ground and therefore there will generally be objects between you and the transmitter which will attenuate the signal.
2. The car body will act as a very good shield for the signal if the antenna is inside the vehicle.

One of my cars has factory fitted TV reception and the antenna is located inside the rear bumper which not being metal helps but it's still virtually unusable.

I would have thought that fact you are moving around doesn't help either.

In my CLK there is TV built in to the Comand Unit but since analogue was switched off it can't receive a signal.
It was programmed to go off if the car was moving anyway so was of no use to me or any passengers. Far better with the iPlayer on your phone or tablet I reckon.

Does the TV have freeview on it? If not then it probably isn't worth the effort trying to find an aerial.

Am I missing something here...but isn't TV in a car dangerous when you are supposed to be concentrating on driving? - even if TV is for the passengers, the driver will be distracted at some point. I would say that in-car TV reception would be very poor due to low aerial reception and high buildings of which will interfere with the signal....

Not if you mount the TV directly in front of you above the steering wheel, then you can watch TV and see most of the road without having to move your head.

Still sounds less than safe especially "... see most of the road.."
A great cause of distraction

That doesn't sound like a good idea to me

Ah well the solution here is to tape the TV to the steering wheel, then if I do need to see the whole of the road, I can just turn the wheel.

Not only is it dangerous it is illegal if the driver can see it.
