It's still a decent price. Just £5 more than a straight conversion. A lot of the difference would be eaten up by higher tax charges here anyway.

It also does mean you get the Pro version with MCE.

Not a good price when in the past you'd get upgraded for free

I hope that the actual retail is priced in line with Windows 7 where early adopters got it much cheaper (£44).

Nope, Vista was out well before the offer expired likewise for Windows 7. Some people decide to use the offer some time after purchasing their new PC.

£15 is cheap enough, if its VAT paid that brings the price down to about £12 / $18 so about three dollars more than the States, not worth worrying about really.

Apple give you a (completely) free upgrade if you buy one of their computers with their old operating system installed by default as long as it was bought within X days of the release date of the new OS and you can show proof of purchase with the date on it.

They don't do long term upgrade deals like this - so Microsoft aren't exactly pulling an Apple. With Apple you either get a free upgrade if it's within X amount of days of the release date, or you pay the full price.

So they couldn't be any further from doing an Apple at all, really.

from what i've seen of the beta's I don't think them paying me £100 would be enough for me to upgrade

The difference in cost will depend enirely on the exchange rate on the day of purchase. I don't think £15 is going too far. I believe some retailers are or will be offering free upgrades to help shift existing units.
Not sure of my view on the system yet.....I'll wait until it's released properly and get a play on someone elses PC before buying a new laptop or converting mine...........No rush as far as I can see...

For the first time in my life I won't be upgrading. I don't want a touch-screen styled layout on my laptop/desktop thanks.

Have you tried it? Works just fine and dandy with a mouse.

If it was a straight like for like price with the conversion rate it is today the price would be £12 which would include 20% VAT...so not exactly a million miles away...

Going from 7 to 8 is pointless.

Well on my computer Windows 8 is considerably faster to boot up and shut down than 7.
Plus who knows what apps will be written for Metro, that won't be available to 7.

I still think Windows 8 is a mish-mash and Metro is not really for a desktop......but I'm warming to it.

You're right. Apple produce a new priced version of their OS every couple of years, so they gouge even more than Microsoft do.

It is the same every time.

A free upgrade + shipping costs though MS may cut out the middleman this time and just do cloud delivery.

Paying to downgrade from 7 to 8 is the biggest con of the decade!

I'll wait until the next "Business" version of Windows where the desktop is reinstated.

It's like the Win 9x / NT split all over again!

It's not a con and no one is forcing you to do it.

The desktop is still there - it's the Start buton that has been taken away - and I think you will be waiting a long while to get it back - Microsoft is putting A lot of money into this so there is no going back

Many of us who have tried 8 see it as an improvement over 7, you don't have to upgrade do you.

The will always be the option of an upgrade path for existing PCs, every version of windows so far has had this option.
