This has reminded me that the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is on Film4 at 2300 hrs.

Looking forward to it. Never seen it or the remake.

I'm going to say Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes too.

Can't argue with The Thing or Cape Fear either.

I'll go for the Coen bothers' True Grit, though it doesn't supplant the John Wayne version, which is still fantastic. I suppose it's not strictly a remake anyway as it's another interpretation of the original novel.

For me it would have to be The Man Who Knew Too Much, the original seemed too rushed but I still thought it was good. I haven't seen any of the other Planet of the Apes films but Rise of the Planet of the Apes has been one of my favourite films of the 21st century.

The Wizard of Oz (1939) - there had been two previous versions and an animated one.
I can't find any information on a The Wizard of Oz film previous to that.

I suppose so . It does bear a very close resemblence to Conquest Of The Planet of The Apes in it's plot.

The remake of "The Hills Have Eyes" was surprisingly good.

There were a couple of earlier film versions, one in 1910, one in 1925, the latter featuring a young Oliver Hardy. He was not invited back for the 1939 version as the producers decided that the line 'Lions, and tigers, and fat blokes! Oh My!' didn't quite work...

The thing remake last year was awful. Loved the Carpenter film. 3:10 to yuma weren't as good as the originals. I did like Russell Corwes 3:10 to yuma, just a shame Christian Bales acting was so bad in it

True grit for me, as both were excellent original and remake.

Hound of Love: I liked the hills have eye remake too, to my surprise

Some of these have been mentioned, but they were the ones that sprang to mind:

- War of The Worlds (2005) (one of Cruise's best acting roles imo)
- King Kong (2005)
- Oceans 11 (2001)
- The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
- Gone In 60 Seconds (2000)
- The Mummy (1999)

I thought Footloose was quite good, the remake stuck to the original storyline from the old one, not much was changed. Still used the same music. If anything, they just made it more modern.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes wasn't even a prequel, it was a total reboot, a fresh start. It was intended as a new origin story for a totally new series of films. Subsequent films will take a different direction to the original series of films.

Cape Fear. I can't decide which version I like better...Robert Mitchum is one of my favourite actors, and he was great in that film; Gregory Peck was great too. But then the remake has De Niro at his most menacing....

True Grit, too. Jeff Bridges is just terrific - much more of an actor than John Wayne ever was (yes, I know Wayne won an Oscar for the film, but really? He was great at what he did, but he always did the same thing!)
