Beatles - Rubber Soul vs Revolver

Which one is your favourite?

I'm gonna have to pick Rubber Soul purely because 3 of my favourite Beatles songs are on there (In My Life, Norweigan Wood and Nowhere Man)

Rubber Soul has In My Life, probably my favourite song ever, so I'd have to pick that one. Revolver is brilliant too though.

Rubber Soul, love the direction they took on that album. I'm Looking Through You is also my favourite Beatles song.

For me it is easily Revolver. There are only four songs on it that I dislike - Tomorrow Never Knows, Yellow Submarine, I Want To Tell You and Love You Too - apart from these I adore every single track on the album. On Rubber Soul however - there are only four songs I do like - Norwegian Wood, I'm Looking Through You, Nowhere Man and In My Life.

I think Rubber Soul feels more fun and light-hearted. There's a couple of songs I'm not too keen on or that feels like filler - You Won't See Me, Michelle, What Goes On, Wait.

Revolver is a more complete piece of work, with each track feeling important, even though I can't stand Got To Get You Into My Life.

So I'm not really sure.
Overall though I think Revolver is more impressive as an album.
However I agree with George Harrison that they are pretty much part 1 and part 2 of a very great time in The Beatles career.

That's interesting, I love Michelle and think Rubber Soul is by far the more complete work.

Also Yellow Submarine is dire.

Revolver

mostly because of Tomorrow Never Knows
but also cause there's only one filler and you can sense them uping the ante at each other
if only 'If I Needed Someone' could have replace yellow submarine

aah those minor sixths

Revolver

Anyone else think McCartney's best Beatles songs might be on this album? Eleanor Rigby, For No One, Here There and Everywhere, Got To Get You Into My Life. IMO This is the first album where his tunes are consistently as good if not better than Lennon's.

On the whole though there's very little filler on these albums and even the fillers good! I don't give a crap what anyone says Yellow Submarine is an amazing song to sing along to. (Especially drunk. )

Ooooh, now you are asking.

I think it would have to be Revolver, For No-One, Here There and Everywhere...perfection.

Yes, his cringy-ditty side doesn't get a look in on this album - it resurfaces on Sgt. Pepper though

without Yellow submarine (sorry, i hate it) Revolver would be a perfect album

Revolver is my favourite album but Rubber Soul is a great album as well.

Paperback Writer and Rain were recorded during the making of Revolver but were released as singles and didn't go on the album. Day Tripper and We can Work it Out were recorded during the Rubber Soul sessions but again didn't make the album.

It's incredible to think that two of the greatest albums ever made could have been even better if the Beatles put their singles on the albums.

Agreed. I've always thought McCartney peaked on Revolver. Eleanor Rigby was arguably the greatest song he ever wrote. The weaker Beatles stuff - Why Don't We Do It In The Road, Hey Jude, Honey Pie, Ob Le Di,.. etc began after this album, and for me his songs with Wings.often were embarrassing

I don't think Yellow Submarine is filler. Revolver was the start of psychedelic pop,on which many bands jumped aboard in 1967, months after Revolver was released That's why for me Revolver was a far more important album than Rubber Soul. Everything seemed to change after Revolver, including the way album covers were designed.

I asked my dad this question. He responded with "Sgt Pepper or Abbey Road"

Not what I asked, but hey!

Spot on!

McCartney did reach his peak with 'Revolver', as did the group. There is little filler on the album, although personally i have always found 'I Want To Tell You' the least amazing song on the album, but that's not to imply it is not good.

'Rubber Soul', for me, hasn't the same consistent level of brilliance, although it is a fine album on its own terms.

Although similar to a degree, 'Revolver' shows a much greater advancement in terms of studio experimentation, with psychedelia very much on its fringes at times (obviously 'Tomorrow Never Knows'), whereas 'Rubber Soul' has always had a slightly folky element at the core of its sound. I never thought those albums were as alike as George Harrison suggested they were in his Beatles Anthology interview. I preferred the Beatles in this period befire 'Sgt Pepper', when they became a little too self conscious and self indulgent for my liking, which stifled a little the musical spontaneity.

1966 really was the Beatles best year where recorded output was concerned. The Beatles actually released less actual music in 1966 than was the norm. Maybe that's why partly they managed to maintain such high standards that year.

I think what I don't like about Michelle is that it's just Paul by himself. I really enjoy the fun, combined effort of the band, and Michelle doesn't have that energy for me.

Yellow Submarine was particularly wrote with kids in mind, but yeah it does feel a teensy bit out of place on Revolver, where every other song seems quite mature and experimental.

I seem to prefer Paul's songs more than the others, Blackbird is my favourite Beatles song for example, so maybe it's just me.

I much prefer John's songs, so obviously different tastes.
