Hd
I a thinking of changing our TV for one with HD.
I see that say BBC1 is has some programmes transmitted in HD so does the TV show the programme in HD or do I have to find the HD channel. |

You have to be on BBC1 HD, which is a seperate channel.

Then there's the BBC HD channel. That generally shows anything on BBC 2 that has been produced in HD, with the gaps filled by HD programming from BBC 3 and 4, and repeats from all four BBC channels. Later this year, it's thought (though yet to be confirmed) that BBC HD will simply become BBC 2 HD. |

Er, it has been confirmed in the BBC's DQF consultation response.

Some receivers have an option to automatically switch to the HD channel when an HD programme is being broadcast, but this only works for BBC channels and tends to cause other problems so I prefer to do it manually.

You'd be mad to be watching anything other than the regional news or other local opt outs on BBC 1 SD, if you have access to BBC 1 HD I've remapped BBC 1 HD to LCN 1 (and BBC 1 SD South to 999, just one step 'down' from 1 ) |

It'll be in the instructions, if the manoeuvre is possible.

The Toshiba 32BV702 cannot receive Freeview HD broadcasts. So doesn't really matter if it allows remapping of the LCNs or not. You won't have any HD channels to re-map.
http://www.home-entertainment.toshib...CD-TV/32BV702/ No mention there of Freeview HD. |

Just to reiterate what chrisjr says, you must get a set that explicitly has the Freeview HD logo on it. It doesn't matter how many times it says it's HD ready, Full HD, 1080p or whatever, if it doesn't have the Freeview HD logo (and most still don't) it will not receive Freeview HD channels.
http://www.freeview.co.uk/HD Also, a 32" set is borderline for HD being worthwhile, at the distance that most people sit you are unlikely to notice much difference. Close up you certainly will, but most people don't have their sofas that close! |

Bear in mind that BBC1 HD (Sky 143) does not carry any regional programmes and they refer you to SD at the appropriate time. There is talk of BBC Scotland HD being launched by the end of 2012 as the Pacific Quay studios are fully HD. So are the Salford studios.Several of the TV Centre studios are HD and BBC News will go into HD early next year when they move to Broadcasting House where there will be five TV studios equipped for HD. Weather will also move there.

Full HD display HD ready Display etc I can assure you that HD viewing is not borderline even with quite small (full HD) sets viewed beyond HD distances. A good way to see this is to view BBC (SD) and then switch to RedButton with the 1/4 size picture - that will effectively be in HD resolution* (but still with SD artefacts!) and I'm sure you will see quite a difference. Our Panasonic Freeview HD set does allow re-positioning of the LCNs - and we have this permanently set (it maintains this through updates (but not full re-scans). We have BBC1, ITV1 and Ch4 regional on 991, 993 an 994 with HD channels in the 'correct' positions - BBC HD on 999 and 301 on 998 (and 302 on 997), The references in the EPG all point to the New positions - eg BBC 1 info gives "Also in HD on DVB 1: BBC 1 HD ..." or more obviously BBC3 MOTD live tonight ... "Also in HD on DVB 999: BBC HD 19:30..." Pity there is no 'Blue' (say) button to switch to the regional stream and back as required. *with Overscan off it will be smaller than 1/4 screen as there is masking of the (thumbnail's) overscan on the Red Button - which IMHO does make sense or the thumbnail field of view would be greater than the main picture. |

Really I was just trying to point out, that for regular viewing on the sofa at the opposite side/corner of the room to a 32" set you are unlikely to see much difference between SD and HD and I would maintain that is true for most people. With a 50" set it would be rather different. I accept that on my 19" set in the kitchen (with an HD box connected) HD looks much better when I am standing at the sink!

I meant the same - I walked to the other end of our lounge looking at our 42" set from about 20 feet and the difference is still obvious even without my glasses on (this was BBC1/BBC 1 HD - Queens Club Tennis).
We still habitually watch at SD distances as we would need about a 60" TV for HD - and the missus (originally) though 42" was way too big! Digressing slightly our HD Ready (Display!) 23" SD set in the kitchen has a terrible processor on it and it looks terrible from the sink! - an old SD Box we have is much better on it - but its too much Faff. It is the first receiver we would replace although it is only a couple of years old. Not all Freeview receivers are created equal - its picture from (its own) DVD is OK so the problem is in decompressing DVB/MPEG2. |

just to add, you can adapt a tv using a FreeviewHD box (or HD box for any broadcast option). Not having it built in does not mean you cant view FreeviewHD (or other HD service) on its screen.....
And if your going to be recording stuff, you will need a box for recording anyway. As long as you buy a dual tuner HD pvr (for freeview, or other service) it will also provide the live HD picture to the tv screen (as well as making HD/SD recordings). As i have said before, due to some geographical issues, very slow (years) freeview rollout, for many the limited channels on freeview Lite (or even on the main freeview service for some people), and the hard push by sky over the years, many people in this part the country never even tune in their tv's, and simply rely on a external box for freesat or sky. Here, using a tv's built in freeview/freeviewHD is a minority, which is oposite to most of the country. |

... The BBC says that the Nations will go HD before English regions - in simple terms it means replacing existing play out.. (which are getting old except PQ) and buying HD capacity from ATOS... (and a few bits of down res for SD and an HD sustaining feed). ENglish regions is more complex and numerous - hence expensive! |

That's from the pre-consultation report; I can't find the post-consultation one offhand but it basically just replaced every "would" with "will"
