Alternate Star Wars prequel trilogy
Now before you say anything, I'm sure there'll probably have been about a dozen other similar threads but I'm fairly new and just wondered, as the Star Wars prequels attracted a lot of criticism, how you think they could've been handled better? I'll post my outline of how I think the 3 films should have turned out like later, until then I'd just to know your opinions on the films and what you'd have liked to see?.

The cast not referring to a young Vader as 'Annie'.
No Hayden Christensen (see also Jake Lloyd). No 'virgin birth' tomfoolery. Jar Jar Binks. That's a start...

Not having George Lucas give the actors direction with "faster, more intense".

I shouldn't have been done, even with a different plot. Fans (and i include myself) will have not liked it anyway, because it would have always tainted the impression that the original three had

So much was wrong with the prequel trilogy that in order for me to tell you all what they should have done would take 50,000 words and would cause DS to collapse.

Broad strokes;
Episode 1: Find Anakin as a kid (30 minutes max). Fast forward 10 years - The Clone Wars Episode 2: Revenge of the Sith Episode 3: The Great Jedi Purge Stylistically, real sets instead of over use of CGI. |

During the publicity for the first trilogy, didn't Lucas announce that there would be three, with 4-5-6 prpduced first, then 1-2-3 and finally 7-8-9.

He never had any intention of doing 7-8-9 either. Early in the 90s he handed off what would happen following the events of ROTJ to various science fiction writers. Their books are considered to be part of Star Wars law and so unless he was to make films out of the novels then more sequels are definitely out. As for the topic of the thread, I've always felt that the prequels are set far too close in time to the action of the original films. Obi Wan for example is in his 30s in the prequels and yet he's supposed to be an ancient old man under 20 years later. Plus the Empire essentially rises and falls in 20 years, you get the impression (or at least I do) that the Empire has been around for a long time with a wizened old Emperor who's barely alive. None of that rings true for me. |

I'd have kept Darth Maul right through the trilogy - instead of introducing a new villain for each movie (Sidious in the second and Grievous in the third could have easily been handles by Mauls character).
Lose Jar Jar Binks (and probably the Gungans in general). Recast some of the parts (Anakin, Padme). Rework some dialogue - it just seemed very wooden in places - especially some of the scenes with Obi-wan and Anakin's mother in them (not at the same time obviously). Less CGI - and less scenes designed just to show it off. |

anything that didn't have binks or "roger roger" would have been a vast improvement.

I'm not trolling but where does the Lucas endorsed cartoon "Droids" about R2D2 and C3PO fit in with all this?

When I was a kid I was obsessed with Star Wars. When I'd watch the films and they'd talk about things that happened in the past I'd have images and ideas in my head about what the pre-Episode IV galaxy was like.
The prequels were a huge pile of poo obviously. Then, last Christmas I watched the originals again and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that when they talk about Anakin Skywalker or the Clone Wars the images I have are still the same ones I had as a child. In my head Anakin is an imposing, righteous man who was slowly corrupted rather than a whiny little adolescent who switched for no discernible reason (and he didn't build C3PO). It's almost as if there is no link between the two sets of films for me and that's a good thing. I picked up the original theatrical version DVDs so I don't have to worry about rubbish like the CGI Jabba or Hayden Christiansen being shoehorned in to the last film. |
