Gosh. There have been rumours in the past that didn't come to anything, but finegrs are crossed here. (Which makes typing difficult)

Well, it is now June 18th and Death to the Daleks has been released in the United Kingdom. As a result, the new list looks like this:
Death to the Daleks - UK: Available Now - US:July 10th, 2012 The Krotons - UK:July 2nd, 2012 - US:July 10th, 2012 The Greatest Show in the Galaxy - UK:July 30th, 2012 - US:August 14th, 2012 Planet of Giants - UK: August 20th, 2012 - US:? Remaining: The Reign of Terror The Ambassadors of Death Terror of the Zygons The Mind of Evil The Tenth Planet The Ice Warriors Shada Due to the fact that there is so little left to release, I simply combined the "in production" and "still waiting" lists into a single "remaining" list. And, over the next year, that list should be released.

I haven't seen Death To The Daleks for such a long time. I remember not being impressed with it, in VHS compilation form. It's entirely possible that Mrs Chuff has never seen this one.
Certainly, Death To The Daleks pretty much counts as New DW for me! |

Having watched it for the first time in years at the weekend my advice would be not to get your hopes up. It's a step up from Planet and at 4 parts it doesn't drag too much but that's about as positive as I can get!

I rarely do, at my time of life.

![]() I remember a Token Woman Character who has naff-all to do. There's a noble self-sacrifice of a character I never liked very much to start with. Some creepy chanting. Isolated companion at the beginning echoes Planet, and it's quite eerie to see SJ attacked in the Tardis. The Exillons are quite fun. The root-monster-thing is good. The Daleks using machine guns, and a Dalek-eye-view are also quite memorable. On the whole, I expect this to be bog-standard Terry Nation (ie: not very good), and expect to be relieved at its brevity. Will let you know! |

The system usually associated with NTSC is 480 visible lines - 525 in total. HD, no matter where you are in the world, is 1080, though no benefit would be added by upscaling old analogue videotape to HD. |

If they use PAL masters, then yes and no. Yes they would see all 576 lines of video on a 625-line system (other 49 lines are used for video sync pulses and teletext information) - no, because the upscaling would introduce undesirable artefacts. Don't forget, to make SD into HD, your TV or player actually has to invent new information by analyzing the information on the other lines, copying it and adapting it by combining the information from the two original lines. Due to the limitations of the technology, this would give it a horribly compressed look and wouldn't be much of an improvement over SD, if any improvement at all. The HD standard - worldwide - is 1080 lines. There is no such standard s "1040" lines - and the HD system is always widescreen. No episode of old Who was made in widescreen, so this presents yet another problem. |

Would it not be possible to up-convert the SD to HD? I seriously don't know. Something along the lines of the Vidfire conversion, but for HD? My apologies for showing my ignorance. (I still want the old stuff on Blu-Ray by season for compact storage if nothing else (two or three discs a season as opposed to eight), but an increase in picture quality would be nice as well.) |

yes you can upconvert SD to HD but assuming you are already whatching on a HD tv then you player or TV is already doing that to fill the native screen size, there is no real benefit of this being done on the disc other than putting more episodes to a disc, some might argue marginal benefits of increased colour space and better HD codecs meaning improved compression, but the real life differences are negligible at best, there is only so good 20-30 year old 2" inch or the newer (worse) 1" tape can look.
caveat: the quality of the upconversion is much dependent of the chip performing the function it goes without saying you get what you pay for, i'm assuming however the fact that you interested in picture quality means you have invested in at least half decent quality player / tv. |

All I'm going to say on this matter is: I very much doubt they'll release classic doctor who episodes on blu-ray as there would be very little or no benefit of up-scaling the material and they wouldn't get away with releasing them in standard definition as the whole point of blu-ray is to have HD picture quality. Secondly, the DVD releases will most likely be the last 'physical' format that they will be released on, after that they'll be made available on digital download stores like iTunes and streaming services (some of which already have). So I'm definitely not counting on it!!

I want to purchase and collect Doctor Who, but I have become enamored with the Blu-Ray format. I have now purchased a few movies on VHS when that was the best format, Laserdisc when that was the best format, DVD when that was the best format and now, for a fourth time, when Blu-Ray since it is the best format. And Blu-Ray is hands down my favorite. I hesitate buying anything these days in any other format. Also, the storage capacity is a big deal for me. A complete Doctor Who DVD collection would take a set of shelves all to itself. It would be huge. However, on Blu-Ray in season sets, it wouldn't be nearly as bad, just 35 thin box sets all in a row (Seasons 1-26, The Movie, Seasons 27-31, The Specials Box Set and Seasons 32-33). It would only take up a single shelf (or just a little more maybe). And the fact that I can buy the new stuff on Blu-Ray, but can't get the old stuff on Blu-Ray bugs the heck out of me. I am having the same problem with The Simpsons where I have the newer stuff in Blu-Ray (since they have been putting it out on Blu-Ray), but the older stuff is on DVD. I hate the incongruity in my collection. Dangnabit, If it is good enough to own, then it is good enough to own on the best format available. |

They've already announced the extras for The Ambassadors of Death, Shada extras have been rumoured, there was a picture of one on The Doctor Who News Page. Brian Hodgson says that he recorded a commentary for The Moonbase and Fury from the Deep. But it seems more likely for it to be on the Underwater Menace.

How long does it usually take before they actually make an announcement about whatever it is that they have found?
