Easily Godfather (even assuming that you mean part 1). Scarface is a very good film, one of my favourites, but it pales in comparison and is also outshone by other films mentioned previously - Goodfellas and Casino.

Well it's a mob movie starring Al Pacino and directed by Brian de Palma. If we're talking about Scarface, why not throw Carlito's Way into the equation as well?

It's also easier to compare to the Godfather IMO. Scarface is too overblown and ostentatious. CW has more restraint, and Michael Corleone and Carlito are similar characters. Tony Montana lived in a world of his own creation... Michael and Carlito were both trapped by circumstance in a world they wanted to get out of. The "just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in" quote applies just as easily to Carlito as it does to Michael.

Anyway, I didn't mean to derail the thread.

You are right, scarface and godfather are weird to compare. If i was to compare two mafia films these would not even come to mind. But thats what the guy asked I guess, we could throw in loads of films that would be better to make comparisons. I see your point about the de Palma and Pacino though, and the fact Michael and Carlito have more in common, they are calculated, controlled and understand the reality of that life, whereas Montana was more of a super confident head case that was his own undoing.

The Godfather is hard to beat as a mafia film imo, its just too epic and well made, especially when you combine parts one and two. I cant think of many that are in the same ball park.
