Is Royal Ascot the last racing on the BBC?

I'm sure they've got Chepstow still to do in Christmas before BBC Racing television is consigned to history, not 100% sure.

Not being a race fan so wouldn't know who televises what but who does Cheltenham gold cup and Epsom derby, they're big events?

The Epsom Derby meeting was with the Beeb this year.

I think Cheltenham went to Channel 4 some years ago.

And both have already been on this year anyway.

There is still some other racing to be shown on the BBC this year such as Champions Day at Ascot in October

There's also the King George and Queen Elisabeth stakes which is actually Ascots biggest and it's the second richest race in Britain after the Derby but is not run at Royal Ascot but sometime in July. I think it's on the Saturday before the big meeting at Goodwood which starts on the following Tuesday in that month.

They have:-

The King George and Queen Elisabeth Stakes-Ascot
The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-Longchamp
Qipco Champions Day 2012-Ascot

they do not have the Welsh Derby which is usually run at the end off the year. The 2011 Welsh Derby was their last I think.

So Champions Day I think it has been said by some newspapers is their last meeting. It would make sense for them to end on the Welsh Derby but I don't think they do from what I have heard.

That is called the power of persuasion I think.... I googled Welsh Derby as I have never heard of it and I have worked in betting shops 1988-2011. I know of the Welsh Grand National.

Bugger!!!!! Sorry I think my brain just imploded! Welsh National I meant to say and I am a regular racing watcher and punter. I think that proves that there is really no point reading my posts because there a load off old rubbish.

I am fairly certain I've heard that that's the last racing to be broadcast on the BBC

After Royal Ascot, the Beeb's final 3 racedays are the King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes meeting from Ascot on Saturday 21st July (a week earlier than normal this year to guarantee BBC coverage because of the Olympics); the British Champions Day meeting from Ascot on 20th October and the very last meeting will be the Coral Welsh National from Chepstow on 27th December.

The BBC will not be covering the Arc de Triomphe from Longchamp this year.

I won't miss the horse racing on the BBC.

But I wonder if horse racing will miss the BBC?

Does it matter, as long as it's on FTA? I guess it doesn't matter to the sport whether it's shown on BBC or Channel 4, since both are FTA broadcasters.

It does matter because BBC1 and ITV1 are the channels to be on to maximise the exposure for a sport. BBC2, Channel 4 & Channel 5 historically have much lower audiences for the same events. Although it only involves pressing one button on the handset many people seem reluctant to watch these channels even when big sports events are shown.

I think quite a few people at the BBC will be pleased to have lost the Grand National given the increasing controversy over the event. It's Channel 4's problem now and you have to wonder if it will be scrapped before too long.

I really hope that they don't cover the Welsh National. If Channel 4 are given the coverage then we will get to see Kempton also (last year featured the subsequent Queen Mother Champion Chase winner).

It was in the Racing Post a couple of weeks back (sorry but I can't provide a link). However, I believe Channel 4 may pick this up.

Oh just found out there is actually horse racing from Ascot I thought it was where they just had an annual parade and competition of silly over-large funny hats for women to wear and a talent show for the best attempt at walking on grass wearing stilletto heels and at the same time trying to look elegant.

I hope they do. It would be a great shame if the Arc was no longer shown FTA; it has been on consistently since the 1960s. Of course, Channel 4 have shown it before and might well have kept the rights had they not messed around with it when they decided Italian football was more important.

Royal Ascot on Channel 4 would be ... weird, to me. On the other hand I'd have said the same about Cheltenham once and that only really became a proper national event *after* it moved.

Incidentally I wonder whether they will use More4 to show the last couple of races live. If the races stay at the same times - midweek flat meetings shown by C4 often start earlier than racing usually does in midsummer, but I can't imagine the Ascot authorities would agree to that - they'll probably be able to show four races live on the main channel every day. The BBC currently has two on BBC1, three on BBC2 and the last race on the red button, and I think C4 would want to make all races available live by some means to avoid adverse reactions - More4 would seem ideal.

Not yet
But soon the all gamblers will need to watch channel 4 to get their horse fix just a pity the bbc are not able to replace it with proper sport when it does leave the channel

Not sure what you mean there. The feature race/s will always be on C4, as they are with the big midweek meetings they already show such as Cheltenham. The races which I'm guessing will be on More4 are of lesser importance - though still better than many Saturday afternoon C4 races.

I think I read somewhere that Channel 4 will not tamper with the Royal Ascot format/race times. Therefore, those Coundown and Come Dine With Me fans would have to do without those programmes for one week in the middle of June from next year.

Indeed, but the coverage would presumably still have to end just before 5pm - midweek (and indeed Saturday) C4 coverage has never gone later than that. That was why I suggested More4 for the last two races each day.

First four races on C4, i missed that the first time, i thought you meant that the coverage would switch to More 4 to accommodate Countdown.

All of the races will be on ATR; i would be shocked to see any coverage on More 4. Hopefully people will tune into C4 to watch races that they would have done on the BBC. Finally Aintree's Grand National meeting will receive high quality coverage.
