Has someone spiked Kool Aid with truth serum

IMO Apple make some good products, built to a high standard and with decent aftersales service.

I have never understood why they need to resort to lies and BS to sell their products.

One of my biggest gripes was the suggestion that Macs don't get viruses. For years Apple brazenly tried to hood wink customers with statements about Mac such as

"It doesn’t get PC viruses.

A Mac isn’t susceptible to the thousands of viruses plaguing Windows-based computers. That’s thanks to built-in defenses in Mac OS X that keep you safe, without any work on your part."

Source: Apple site until a few days ago http://web.archive.org/web/201106230...mac/better-os/

Granted, cult members will point out that they are claiming that Apple say that they can't get the same viruses that Windows (PC) can. They will gloss over the fact that elsewhere Apple refer to their devices as PCs.

Reasonable, balanced readers will accept that the suggestion is that buying a Mac means you will not need to worry about malware. Period.

The BS filters down through the Mac loving media and down to the end user, who believes what the media tell them and refuses to run any anti-virus software. Why should he- Apple told him that it is unnecessary.

Running AV software is both a social and personal responsibility. Malware/viruses cost business millions of pounds every year. It's bad enough that Windows owners don't have upto date AV but even worse that Mac owners are spreading Windows malware (in-spite of the Apple claim)

According to a Sophos study of Macs- 1 in 5 carry Windows Malware and 1 in 36 has Mac malware

Recently however Apple has changed tact, I suspect as a result of the negative press following the massive numbers of Macs infected with FlashBack. On the main landing page for the Macs they have dropped all mentions of windows viruses (moving it to the FAQ page instead). Kudos to them but it really is time that they just drop the "no windows viruses" lie.

Who knows, perhaps one day they will drop the "sequences shortened", "made with a little bit of magic", "superfast 4G", need I go on?

If that is what they actually said they told the truth.
OS/X obviously cannot run a Windows viruses but will run OS/X and hybrid viruses.

Obviously if users translate that to 'Macs don't get viruses' then it is just another user error which aids marketing.

Anyway, it is very old regurgitated news.

"That’s thanks to built-in defenses in Mac OS X that keep you safe, without any work on your part." Sounds like "Macs don't get viruses" to me.

With regard to "very old regurgitated news"- the change to their site has only happened in the last week

I was one of them. When I bought my Mac I was full of "Oh I'll never have another virus again" and I was unbearably smug about it for quite a long time, but now I realise Macs aren't as immune as I thought they were.

.
Fortunately some countries have watchdogs with teeth that disagree with you. Hence the Australian courts rejecting Apple's puerile argument that 3.5G is 4G and fining them $2.25m for ripping off iPad customers. Or the €900,000 fine in Italy for conning owners in to paying for unnecessary AppleCare
