30. Haven - Justin Kemppainen (I think this book had been renamed now though, maybe fall of haven or something like that).

111) The Third Man - Peter Mandelson

This is part of my plan to read 2 non-fiction books per month. I have had this book for ages but kep putting it off as I thought it would be a long read - it was and it has taken me 4 days. I found myself liking PM - always a danger with an autobiography! Worth reading - very absorbing

63. Royal Assassin - Robin Hobb

Even better than the first, I'm actually quite worried about how it's all going to work out! While it's themes (royal treachery) and desperate situations remind me of Game of Thrones, it's not nearly as depressing and I cn actually remember who all the characters are!

Part way through these series of books. Totally addictive and I still don't have a clue where this is going to end up. Really Enjoying them.

73. From The Heart - Kym Marsh 5/5 - Massive fan of Kym despite what people think about her in the soap forum! I enjoyed the book, probably one of my favourite celeb autobios (and I've read a lot of them). Funnily enough it took me over a year to finish as I was halfway through when I got my Kindle and it was too expensive on Kindle so finished reading it when I found it in my room the other day.

74. Born Evil - Kimberley Chambers 4/5 - Kimberley is a fantastic author and I always speak highly of her and recommend her books to as many people as I can. All her books have been unputdownable and this was no different, I just didn't like the ending. Everything was sort of tied up but I would've liked to see some revenge carried out on a few characters or a bigger time jump, one year wasn't enough. Roll on the 21st June because I now have no Kimberley books to read till her new one!

Also currently 4% ahead of my target for 150 books according to Goodreads.

36. House Rules by Jodi Picoult – I go through binges of reading Picoult’s novels. Most of them are very predictable and therefore trite, although I have read The Pact a couple of times as I really liked it. This one focuses around whether a boy with Asperger’s Syndrome has murdered somebody or not. Knowing Picoult, I assumed he wouldn’t have and I did guess at the ending way before the boy was even arrested, let alone charged with murder. But it was mildly gripping.(11th – 17th June)

64. Assassin's Quest - Robin Hobb

A long book which allowed for a lot of detail and events which I enjoyed. Many of the loose ends were tied up which I appreciated and it was about the happiest ending we were likely to get (although I don't know whether to be pleased or upset at Verity's fate). I normally get annoyed at such flawed and (at times) stupid characters like Fitz but something about him was actually quite lovable!
I kept picking it up in the day which is a sign to me of a great book, really want to carry on Fitz's story but I've been told I must read the Liveship trilogy first. How connected are the two trilogies? (Feel free to tell me to read it and find out, I'm one of these really impatient people who sometimes flick to the back and ruin the story for myself!)

List excludes graphic novels and comic books (which is 2/3rds of my reading at the moment)

66. The White Tiger - Aravind Adiga 8/10
Atlantic Books (Groove Atlantuc), 321 pages
<Dark Comedy>
Man Booker Prize winner 2008, and deservedly so. Dark comedic look at the underbelly of India and its caste/class system from the point of view of a lowly man with entrepeneural spirit. An enjoyable and addictive read.
67. Last Seen Wearing - Colin Dexter 7/10
Pan Books (Pan MacMillan), 352 pages
<Mystery>
The very first Inspector Morse 'mystery'… a missing student who could be dead, dodgy parents and teachers and the previous inspector on the case dying in a traffic accident… Morse and Lewis are giving a cold case that with so many variables, half-truths and potential motives sees them both really struggle to make any sense of it. Although written in the 1970s still not dated and a good read.

68. Death of A Ladies Man - Alan Bissett 7/10
Hachette Scotland (Hachette UK), 426 pages
<Drama>
Suprisingly thought provoking book about a womaniser, who came to his ways during his marriage… a literary English teacher, Charlie steadily goes downhill in a sea of woman, drugs and simply self centred, lacking empathy behaviour. Yet somehow the book is mostly upbeat as the man himself doesn't really appreciate is lack of empathy or has any awareness of where his life is really heading!

69. The Night Gardener - George Pelecanos 8/10
Phoenix (Hachette UK), 372 pages
<Crime>
On the face of it the story of a serial killer amongst the deprived Black communties in Washinngton DC, apparently returning after a 17 year hiatus… but really a delicately crafted piece of work looking at police, racism, homophobia, mixed race relationships, ambition, love, youth, education in the urban environment etc.... I could go on. Great book by Stephen King's favourite living crime writer.

70. Chapter And Verse - Colin Bateman 6/10
Headline (Hachette UK), 346 pages
<Comedy>
Typical Bateman fare being laughed out loud at times and predictable at other times. A failing literary author and his agent finally have a best-seller on their hands… there's only one small problem they have an actress posing as the writer for PR purposes.

71. Confessions Of A City Girl - Suzanna S.
Virgin Books (Random House), 275 pages
<Historical Drama>
Another damning book, loosely based on fact, but fiction from the pen of the 'City Girl' columnist looking at the excesses and culture that led to the Credit Crunch. Not too technical, yet quite revealing, as well as intresting, as a young woman tells all about her rise through the financial institution ranks to the 'front office' a year before the Credit Crunch; and then recounts her experiences in theose troubling times up to 2009.

72. The Man In My Basement - Walter Mosley 8/10
Serpent's Tail, 213 pages
<Psychological Thriller>
Blakely - unemployed, a layabout, a drunk... and a 33 year-old Afro American failure, has his entire life turned around one summer when a seemingly rich white man approaches offering him upwards of $40,000 to hire the basement Blakel'y inherited family home. An intense thought provoking suspense filled thriller.

I went straight on the the rest of the Fitz stories. I didn't read the Liveship's trilogy until much later.
The Liveship's trilogy are not really connected (at least not to Fitz) but it does give some back story for the Fool and what he did between the two sets of Fitz books ( I think it is about 10-12 years between)

25. Malinche: A Novel by Laura Esquivel - Esquivel's interpretation of the life of Malinalli, aka Malinche, who was sold into slavery in pre-conquest Mexico and became the translator and mistress of Hernán Cortés. I didn't like it. Esquivel's stylistic touches for organizing a story and describing crafts worked in Like Water for Chocolate, because even though it was inspired by one of her ancestors, the story itself was fiction. However, for real historical people like the characters in this book, the jumping around in the timeline and hopping from one person's perspective to another and even Malinalli's internal struggles were just unsuccessful for me.

26. Bonnes Vacances!: A Crazy Family Adventure in the French Territories by Rosie Millard - This was the DS Book Club book for this month and I loved it! I had never heard of Rosie Millard before, but I enjoyed her stories of visiting various French territories. It was quite funny in parts, and I liked her husband and kids a lot, and I thought it was great that she could poke fun at herself about her obsession with France. I'd love to visit the places they went to, especially now that I've been forewarned about the conditions at some of the hotels.

65. Wizard Heir - Cinda Williams Chima

Not quite as good as the previous two in the trilogy but still a nice angle on YA wizard fiction.

76. Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) - Suzanne Collins 4/5 - Not as good as the other two books and the ending didn't particularly satisfy me. Fantastic series though, can't wait to see how much the film ruins this book to water it down so they can still make money from the kids.
