The Truman Show - Underrated?

It strikes me as a film that doesn't get the credit it deserves, maybe this is because Jim Carey is associated with comedy thus viewers overlook that it's actually quite a deep film.

i watched a documentary where Truman Show was mentioned as being one of Jim Carrey's best performances and a departure from his comedy roles that he did before that film.

i think he was oscar nominated for it as well so the film is considered the peak of his career.

yes you are right it;s completely underrated. I went to view it with the misses just after the Ace Ventura and other comedy eras and was initially shocked it wasn't the same old slapstick basis.

The film itself was ahead of the whole big brother era but I think suffered with expectations. I do remember coming out of the cinema and teenagers saying that wasn't funny.

Only real problem I have with the film is at the end of the film which seemed to be slightly to protracted. The one time I wanted to be held in suspense is when truman utters his catchphrase and then walks through the door. That would of been the perfect moment to end the film....

I don't think it's underrated, it was almost universally praised by critics and was a box office success. As I recall, at the time it was quite a big movie.

He got plaudits for Eternal Sunshine so it's not as if he is tarred by Ace Ventura. I enjoyed it.

I don't understand how you think The Truman Show is underrated.
Just about anywhere I read a review about it it's widely well regarded as a film.

I found it to be overrated to be honest. I do like it but the heaps of 5 star reviews as if it was a flawless piece of art at the time was OTT. Just because it got ignored at the Oscars that year doesn't really mean anything. In fact the Oscar snubs just have a lot of fuel for the critics and media pundits to scream louder.

Not underrated at all. It's a very loved film. It surprised me a lot of people i know had heard of it.
Jim Carey not winning or at least being up for an Oscar was a huge crime

Overrated imo. Yet another movie "inspired" by an old Twilight Zone episode.

95% positive reviews by critics and 82% positive by audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

"At the 71st Academy Awards, The Truman Show was nominated for three categories but did not win any awards. Peter Weir received the nomination for Best Director, while Ed Harris was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Andrew Niccol was nominated for Best Original Screenplay. In addition, The Truman Show earned nominations at the Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture - Drama, Weir for Best Director - Motion Picture and Niccol for (Screenplay). Jim Carrey and Ed Harris both won Golden Globes as Best Actor - Drama and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, as did Burkhard Dallwitz and Philip Glass for Best Original Score.

At the 52nd British Academy Film Awards, Weir (Direction), Niccol (Original Screenplay) and Dennis Gassner (Production Design) received awards. In addition, the film was nominated for Best Film and Best Visual Effects. Harris was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and Peter Biziou was nominated for Best Cinematography.

The Truman Show was a success at The Saturn Awards, where it won the Best Fantasy Film and the Best Writing (Niccol). Carrey (Best Actor), Harris (Best Supporting Actor) and Weir (Direction) also received nominations.

Finally, the film won speculative fiction's Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation."

Really not getting an underrated vibe from it at all.

Left me a bit nonplussed. A good film, but not quite up to the praise heaped upon it at the time.

Seemed to be much in keeping with a lot of Peter Weir's output, i.e. it somehow amounts to less than the sum of its very interesting parts.

If I was Truman, after a few weeks in the real world, I'd have gone back to Seahaven

I watched the film once. It was certainly clever and mildly entertaining. I wouldn't watch it again.

Ahead if its time? don't think so.

Old idea turned into a movie, hardly ahead of its time.

I meant in the context of modern reality tv, rather than the story.

Yes, I've always thought it was under-rated, and probably one of Jim Carrey's best roles. It was the first time I'd seen him in a straight role.
