I mean, Bollywood isn't strictly competition either since it is aimed at a different audience.

When you go to the cinema 99.9 % of the films are the latest Hollywood Blockbusters. Even the re release of Jaws is a hollywood blockbuster from many years ago.

Why do none of the smaller companies get a look in? Why can't they have a screen broadcasting "short films" during opening times? And another screen showing a TV channel, or silent film?

Seems a bit unfair that they have us by the balls!

Many countries around the world have flourishing film industries, such as France, Germany and Sweden, and their cinema chains show a healthy mix of national and international movies.

As we in the UK have a shared language with America, we have always relied too heavily on Hollywood to put bums on seats in cinemas at the expense of our own film industry. Also, UK film-goers have always been relucatant to embrance foreign-language films. I went a major cinema chain in Stockholm recently and the 12 screens were showing 4 Swedish films, 3 from USA/Hollywood, 1 French, 2 German and 2 Danish films. My local cinema here has 8 screens and all are Hollywood output. Depressing really, as there's so many great films out there if you're prepared to look outside of the Hollywood bubble.
