Just out of interest what were her sales? ...I know album sales are down at the mo
Chart position is all well and good but sales and longevity are the most important factors

We don't know yet, but the predictions were 40000 - 50000 sales, which is really good I think for this time of year.

I read on the offcial charts that the difference is about 3,000 units so it was very hard-going competition

A Million Lights got to #1 in the Scotland only chart. Bieber 'only' made #3. So yay for that.

Well, 3,181 less than J. Beiber who is the poster boy of the current teen brigade, so not bad.

Thanks Absolutely.

Not meaning to go off topic but Carrie Underwood did very well in my opinion dispite having little to any promotion biggest impact she has had in the UK so far.

I haven't heard either album but, and I say this as a big Cheryl fan, I hate 'Call My Name' and I'm loving Beibers 'Boyfriend'. I'm bored of all these pop stars bringing out 'dancy' tracks remixed by Calvin, Guetta, Example etc.

Is the rest of Cheryl's album like this? If so, I'm afraid I'll be avoiding it.

But I don't think he has that big a following over here though.

In the UK though?
Why, do you think he does have a big following here? Because although he's well known, I wouldn't say he sells masses of music here...

Just a few weeks ago, loads of users were predicting there was no way in hell he'd outsell Cheryl.

It's true, Bieber's never been as big in the UK as he is in other places though he clearly has a very dedicated fanbase. I thought Cheryl would get #1 but I think she released the album too soon after the single, she should have left it until the second single to build up anticipation. I think she will outsell Bieber overall though.

I genuinely don't know. I've never heard his music as I've always avoided him. He looks like Hazel Dean (old singer from the 80's who I've never liked). But I assumed he was big by all the publicity he gets.

So my "Okay ... " was genuine and not a sarcastic response.

No her album isn't like Call My Name, it is more mid tempo.

The sales are low and it is quite low for Cheryl, but album sales at this time of year are really low anyway, so as long as she continues to release singles and promote them well they sales should build up nicely.

Only 3,000 behind Bieber (who is huge worldwide) and a single that sold 220,000 copies in two weeks.......somehow, I doubt she's crying.

I must say I find these sales qute concerning, Yes if she keeps releasing singles the sales will keep going but if you apply a rule of thumb that tends to broadly work for most albums, that total sales will be 4-5 times first week sales for albums that keep selling, that means my expectation is Cheryl will shift something well below 200,000 copies of this album. Whilst this may be good sales in the current market it is very worrying for album sales as a whole given the profile and publicity Cheryl has. This seems to be a theme affecting artists who have historically had great sales (Alex) as well as others. I can't help thinking that the relative success of Bieber and Carrie Underwood (who I really like) is more to do with generally low sales than any real breakthrough. The same can be said of UK artists doing well in the US charts where album sales are painfully low given the population.

Cheryl will be fine because she will sell out concerts and make money that way but I do wonder where the major record labels go from here with their big overheads.

Album sales aren't the only important measure as they used to be. With 360 deals, labels can get a share of touring revenue. Call My Name is the equivalent of an additional 22,000 album sales (at least). VEVO can bring in good money if you get a real hit video.

I'd have thought the plan would be to knock out a few more singles and make sure she still has some momentum around Christmas. But there's talk of a GIrls Aloud reunion then?

One thing Syco have done with some acts is have 10 track albums rather than 12. Presumably that cuts costs and avoids spending money on "filler" that will never be released.

I'm surprised both sold as low as they did. Even Nicki Minaj sold more and I'd argue both Bieber and Cheryl are much more established in the UK, especially Cheryl!

what's happening at the moment...were album sales like this this time last year?

i wouldn't fancy anyone's chances of releasing a huge seller just now, from Adele downwards

Albums down 17% vs same week last year. Singles up 11%.

I'm not a fan of Cheryl, but anyone saying a top 50 album is a flop is nuts. It's an achievement that one's album hits the top 5o these days.

Congrats to number 2 Cheryl, an inspiration that someone with limited vocal ability can make it ....and I don't mean this in a mean way.

I'm sure she is happy with number 2#
