BBC Radio Sheffield General Chit-Chat Thread

I've noted there's a new thread started up about BBC Radio Sheffield and BBC Three Counties Radio swapping studios for the day as an experiment but there isn't a specific BBC Radio Sheffield discussion thread in Digital Spy (as far as I have searched) so I have started one up.

I hope we have some Radio Sheffield listeners in DS because it'd be great to discuss who likes what on the station and who doesn't like certain things. Let's take the sports side to start with I think they do a fantastic job of their outside broadcasts for all the local football matches does anyone agree or disagree?.

I find Radio Sheffield Sport good, however I worry what will happen, if we have to take other Radio Stations commentary of Sheffield United.
I must also praise BBC Radio Sheffield's coverage of the death of Gary Speed. Once it was announced on Sunday, normal programming changed and Phil Butler, started reviewing his life. Yes some of the reports came from 5 live, but this was BBC Local Radio at its best.
The cuts will stop this

Ah contact with the outside world I just knew there had to be some BBC Radio Sheffield listeners in here somewhere lol thanks for posting. I love Radio Sheffield's sports outside broadcasts too I listen to all the Wednesday commentaries and I am dreading this planned idea for us to merge with Leeds broadcasts when they're covering our local teams, it will be dreadful, the job they do at RS is second to none and I think it's a lousy idea to merge them. I have been told to write to the BBC about this and let them know my feelings so I plan to shortly. The best person to write any letter of complaint to when you've got something important to say is always the top person and not the dogs bodies so below is the address of the man in overall charge of the BBC Mr Mark Thompson, maybe if you feel as strongly as I do Handsworth Guy you might consider doing it too and anyone else too reading this if you are a listener in this area.

Write to:
Mr Mark Thompson
BBC Director General Office
White City
London

Or visit the BBC Trust website and register your complaint there.

Hope you can continue posting HG it'd be great to get this thread off the ground and running well.

I listen to a fair bit of Radio Sheffield, Rony Robinson is a good listen, as is Steve White on the shows that he does during the week. I'm not a fan of Paulette Edwards though, just doesn't appeal to me.

I must admit my main interest in listening is for the sport although I think Steve White's northern soul & motown show is absolutely fantastic too. Saturday afternoon sports coverage is very very good and they are quite fair how they share it around who they cover, everyone knows Wed & Utd are the biggest clubs in the area with the most fans but they still cater for Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Chesterfield, I also like their nightly sports phone-in "Football Heaven" and the post Saturday matches phone-in, (the original sports radio phone-in) "Praise & Grumble".

I'm not in their area but I regularly listen to the Toby Foster show podcast. Wish the breakfast show here was as good!

I have always enjoyed listening to Rony Robinson when in the area. Also I remember Howard Pressman doing a very good afternoon show - is he still going?

Yes Howard still broadcasts on Radio Sheffield, I wonder how many people know he is the brother of ex Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Kevin Pressman from when they were successful in the 1990's!, Rony's been there for more years than I can remember.

Of course the most famous presenter Radio Sheffield ever had was the late Tony Capstick, I loved listening to Tony and was so saddened when he died so suddenly.

Rather a troubled character was Tony, I have the single he released, the Capstick Comes Home/Sheffield Grinder. He didn't do himself any favours when he held the taxi driver up at gunpoint though did he.

A Show worth listening too, is The Phil Butler Friday Night Show, 70's and 80's.
A mix of regular tunes together with the ones you never hear on the radio.
Together with the Steve White Soul Show (now networked with BBC Radio Leeds), Radio Sheffield put out good evening shows.
The cuts mean these would be lost!

Yes lol Tony was a right character for sure, I remember the taxi incident always thought that one was very strange indeed. Tony wasn't on this earth for long after they sacked him, I have always wondered if the sacking destroyed him mentally, it was such a shame him dying so young.

Also on BBC Radio Sheffield (and Leeds and York) is Diana Luke's Late Show on Saturdays, concentrating on a mix of 60s songs. It strikes the right balance compared to Radio 2's Sounds of the Sixties (too obscure) and 60s Sunday (too familiar).

As you may have noticed, Steve White left last weekend and Phil Butler has been promoted to take over Steve's shows as well as his own Friday show (and Tuesday show over the summer).

What is spooky is that Phil was given the day off of Friday 8th June, and Steve sat in. Then a week later Steve leaves and Phil takes over his erstwhile shows.

There is a good reason for this. Steve has just joined Hallam FM as the drivetime DJ. This represents a promotion compared to doing just weekend work at BBC Radio Sheffield.

Oh, I'm really going to miss Steve's show on Saturday night. I wonder if someone else will take over it, or if it will be scrapped completely for something else.

WHY is it it's always the best shows that get taken away or spoilt?, and moving to Hallam as well what a step backwards.

Depends on what view you take - he's moving from a number of off peak shows at the BBC to one peaktime show on the biggest station in the area. Some would say that's a step forwards.

And he seems to be winning awards for the quality of the show too.

Newcastle's current breakfast show can't even win one in 3 years since Mike Parr left, and like Toby's, is co-presented by a stand-up comedian.

What is it about Toby that's bringing him acclaim while Alfie and Charlie are failing to get awards compared to when Mike was there?

Even Mike was winning awards for Cumbria, and Phil Roberts represents all 3 stations in his job.

Steve White also used to drive the desk for Toby. Wonder if DQF means he's self-opping again now?

Phil Butler has taken it over. As he loves talking about music it could change in due course. In particular, as a new England-wide programme is due to be broadcast from 7 til 10pm on Mondays-Fridays, I reckon Phil's current Friday night 70s and 80s show will then move to Saturdays from 6 til 9pm.
