CH4HD listings in EPG.

For BBC1/ITV1, when selected from the EPG (on 101,103), when any programmes on these channels are in HD, you are given the option to view these either in SD (on 101/103) or in HD on 108/119.

Why is this not tbe case for CH4's HD programmes?

(Likewise for HD programmes on the BBC channels that are also shown on BBC HD, eg BBC2's)

AFAIK it's down to the broadcaster and only BBC 1 do it. the boxes can't do it unless they are given the option.

Huh? No, it works for me for all HD channels, even for programmes that aren't in HD.

* Select a programme to record
* It'll ask you if you want to record it in SD or HD
* Select the one you want

...on my Humax FOXSAT-HDR. It works for BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4 and BBC programmes on BBC HD (even at different times).

May only be so for Freeview?

Panasonic TV.

Guess its a live-able fault, but they will blame the EPG data which isn't in their control and pass the blame onto Freesat.

Yes I know, I have one, just thought the same may apply to Freesat. I always use mine in non-Freesat mode to get HD unencrypted.
As has been reported on the Freeview forums only the BBC supply this option on Freeview that's why I put AFAIK!

Sorry if I offended you.

You said ONLY freeview, so not only freeview then as it works on freesat.

Don't think you did.

Just checked under Freeview mode on the TV, and the EPG only gives you the option to view either SD/HD on the BBC channels. No option for ITV1 or CH4.

Thanks seafra.

Well I think "may" means it's not definitive?

Freesat (Foxsat-Hdr) has the HD link from the SD version in the epg, Freeview (HD FOX T2) does not. Tested on a programme that is real HD (not upscaled)

So who's best to contact to report this 'bug' ?

Freesat - as they control the EPG, and the 'bug' is on various manufacturer's boxes
Manufacturers-as it's they equipment that's experiencing the 'bug'
Broadcasters-as it's they programmes that's not populating the EPG data

Freesat don't have any control over what data the broadcaster chooses to include in the epg.

Channel 4 clearly include the data on the Freesat epg to cross link HD and SD content so it must be down to the box maker to implement the link.

decided to contact both Freesat and the Manufacturer.

here is Freesat's response.....

Quote:
You are not given this choice on your Humax HDR for Channel 4 programmes as the broadcaster does include this information in their EPG data. For more information please feel free to contact Channel 4 on 08450 760 191.

Equally, Panasonic have not included the feature to recognise this information in their EPG display. For more information, Panasonic can be contacted on 08448 443 852.

We would like all our manufacturers and broadcasters to offer the same EPG features, but this is not always possible.

Many Thanks,
The freesat team

Your original question is below.

Subject:
EPG SD/HD selection

Question:
For BBC1/ITV1, when selected from the EPG (on 101,103), when any programmes on these channels are in HD, you are given the option to view these either in SD (on 101/103) or in HD on 108/119.

Why is this not the case for CH4's HD programmes (Likewise for HD programmes on the BBC channels that are also shown on BBC HD, eg BBC2's) ?

The Humax FOXSAT HDR, doesn't seem to have this problem - yet my (Panasonic TV) does.

"You are not given this choice on your Humax HDR for Channel 4 programmes as the broadcaster does include this information in their EPG data." - strange as Muzar had mentioned that it works on his Humax HDR !!

(I did not tell Freesat that I have a Humax HDR - which I do not own !)

Top marks for Freesat for responding so quickly......

You would think Freesat would get it right, but they have not.

Here's the linked data from the Freesat epg for a Channel 4 SD epg entry

Just checked the instruction manual for my Panasonic TV.

It definately states that you should have the option to choose either the SD/HD channel if the programme is in HD and selected from the SD channel EPG entry.

Page 20...

Quote:
If a programme exists in both HD and SD broadcasts, the "View Option" screen will be displayed to select HD or SD broadcast.
".....will be......"

it does not state "...maybe...."

so Freesat is incorrect by saying "Panasonic have not included the feature to recognise this information in their EPG display"

Just checked on a friend's Humax Fox-Sat HD box....

It doesn't have this option for any of its channels where teh programmes are in HD.

(Strange that there was no Genre display when entering the Guide, - disable)

For heavens sake how much more comvincing do you need ?

Already shown you the list of alternatives the box can offer. In the event of no clash it offers the HD version when reserving from the SD epg entry. In the event of a clash it will offer the alternative SD versions as shown.

Sensibly the Humax boxes have a menu option to turn off the annoying initial genre display. (Also a way of instantly displaying the cached epg without loading a whole new one).

Here's the result of setting a reservation for a movie tonight from 104.(What it can't do on CH4 is distinguish between true HD sourced content and upscaled content).

Oh, I'm convinced... that my Freesat HD TV isn't displaying the correct options (despite what the manual states, or the 'incorrect' advice supplied by Freesat)....

My Freesat HD TV and friends Humax HD box doesn't show this for the reservation that you have supplied as an example.....

(Just thought I'd try it on the Foxsat-HD as you mentioned that it workded on the Foxsat-HDR)

Is that a Foxsat-HD ?

If so neither that or your TV is a Freesat+ specified device. You presumably only have a watch timer not a recording capability.

The linking capability is specified for pvrs. I can see the point in recording from a SD channel with a HD simulcast one like CH4. if you are short of hdd space. But why not just always watch CH4-HD on a TV or a Foxsat-HD

Yes..

Seems strange that it works on the Foxsat-HDR, but not the Foxsat-HD

(The store must have been using a Foxsat-HDR when they demonstrated this feature a while back, and I'm sure they said it was the same on all Freesat HD boxes/TVs)
