PS3 and SSD?
I'm sure it's been asked before, but can an SSD be used in the PS3 (Phat or Slim)
I've the chance of a 120gb one cheap. |

I should have googled myself.
![]() I may give it a try. And see if it will boot up games faster as well. Pretty good performance boost ![]() http://www.hardcoreware.net/ssd-on-p...ormance-guide/ |

yes, though you'll only see a performance boost in Hard Drive heavy games, such as Gran Turismo 5, Skyrim, RAGE, etc, those kinds, but most others you'll barely be able to notice a split second difference. Of course Install/Delet times for things like Demo's and PSN installs are better to.

I've a few full game installs (PSN+) so they should boot quicker. Only downside is to re-download them all again.

I'd imagine it would be a lot quieter and much less fan activity, so maybe worth it just for those alone.

It's really not worth it.
You're limited to 128GB which is no space at all once everything is installed. Also, the difference in speed is next to nothing. Yes loading times on SOME games will be quicker, but not to the point where I'd spend £88, hours re-downloading and installing, and limited space. If it meant no loading times then yes I would, but not for the slight difference it gives. Use the money and get a 1TB drive. |

Agree with the above 100% stick it in your laptop or your PC you will benefit far better. The ps3 has a sata 1.5 controller that will just make the difference minimal. 1TB HDD would be more beneficial.

I remember reading about the memory leak in Skyrim caused framerate to be about 7fps in HDD, 15fps on Hybrid HDD and 30fps on SSD so it makes a massive difference.

Get a hybrid drive . See post on http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1680434. I use a 7200rpm wd scorpio drive its not a hybrid drive they weren't out then but I get a hybrid if I needed to update as you get the space an speed advantages , the SSD you will get some benefit but it won't operate at its fullest speed due to the connection interface in the ps3

So telling people about a half price deal is classed as advertising, that's just wrong.... My post was to help people, I made no money on doing that.

I would also advise against putting such expensive drives into a PS3 and into a PC instead where you could make the most of it. The small improvements that are seen in PS3 games using these drives is only relevant for a handful anyway. A 1TB drive would be a better bet imo as it's much more suitable/reliable for longer term data storage not to mention how much cheaper they are. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/di...s3-performance Good article from Digital Foundry on the benefits (or lack) of using SSD/Hybrids in PS3's. They actually recommended reformatting your standard HDD if you are experiencing performance issues due to the fragmentation PS3's file system is susceptible to (same as PC) and noted a much better performance increase by doing this, which make more sense over an SSD if you've been using the same drive for a while. |

Don't forget that the ps3 takes 10% off for something - so you'll actually have around 100gb to use....
Plus, ssd has a limited lifespan - check to see if the ssd is designed for lots of writing and reading... The ssd I put in my mac pro is designed for reading as I have the home directory pointed to a 1tb WD black |

the laptop will benefit a whole lot more than the ps3, quicker load times, less heat, better battery life.
For the ps3 i totally would recommend a hybrid over a ssd as youll benefit from the speed and storage space, and will be considerably cheaper than just a standalone ssd. For SSD Crucial are great, i have one in my pc and have had no probelms besides having to update the firmware, i had the M4? its the blue labelled one i forget its been a while. |

Was tempted for some time with the SSD approach for PS3, particularly after seeing how rapid these drives are in our PC's/Laptop. Decided against it after some extensive research, allied to the fact that we are light gamers.
I would however second comments in this topic and indeed can report positively on our recent PS3 Hybrid HD/SSD purchase. Very nippy loading and storage isn't compromised. |
