Cod liver oil and evening primrose oil for dogs.
I've just come back from the vets and I'm a little confused so hopefully somebody can help!
He has recommended my dog goes onto cod liver oil and evening primrose oil to help her skin. The tub he wanted to sell me was about £70 and she'd need 3 capsules daily so I was a little hesitant and said I'd get them from somewhere else. He suggested I just go to Holland and Barrett and get the capsules there. I did ask if human capsules were safe for dogs and he said cod liver oil is cod liver oil in any form...and the same for the evening primrose oil. This is where I'm confused...I was under the impression that capsules for human consumption you were not able to give to dogs? Is this true or is the vet right. I know I should probably believe the vet because he's the expert but I thought I'd seek some advice! I've also been down the oil route with my pooch and after a week or so she hates the taste and refuses to eat so ideally i'd like to try the capsules. |

A little cod liver oil should be fine for dogs - our dogs used to have it. Both lived until their teens so it didn't do them any harm.
They liked it straight off the spoon (their spoon of course ..) so don't bother with capsules. You might even get them in the £ shops. H&B shops are still pricey. Oops, just read the last bit, sorry. My dogs were addicted to the taste. I guess I was lucky.

I give my dog human cod liver & evening primrose oil capsules, 3 for 2 in Boots & no problems. Have been giving him them since we got him 10 months ago.
My mate's dog gets hayfever & the vet prescribed the dog eye drops. They were the exact same as human ones but about 3x the cost! He just gets the dog's stuff from Morrisons now. |

You were right, you should probably believe your vet, he had nothing to gain from telling you this information but had money to lose by telling you

some grooming products company (cannot remember the name for the life of me, but their products are very popular with groomers) sell a bottle of evening primrose oil which you just measure out into the dogs food, it's really good fort heir skin and coat.
Getting human capsules for them though is perfectly fine - and a darn sight cheaper. our older collie lived for 14 years and was given both cod liver oil and evening primrose oil capsules from the age of 2 until a week before she passed away of natural causes in 2011. our current dog is on cod liver oil and he'll just take them straight out of my hand without a fuss and swallow them down (despite not being a lover of fish!) he's not on evening primrose as his skin and fur are in good condition, and unlike our older dog, he doesn't have any allergies. |

I've been down the cod liver oil route on her food, she'll lap it up no problems but after a week-10 days she refuses to eat, which is strange for a labrador. I'll get some capsules of both because I'm fairly sure she will just think they are a treat, she'll take a chewy worming tablet no problem.
Thank you for the advice. I was just double checking really. |

I give my dogs Sardines (with bones) in olive oil once per week. They love the taste and it has all the Omega 3 fish oils naturally plus olive oil which is good for their coats. The bones give them additional calcium as well
I just buy the tins in bulk, works out much cheaper than tablets or cod liver oil. |
