Tennis - Grunting - I can't stand it
Watching Ivanovic v Martinez Sanchez - and the match is spoiled by the constant grunting - or should I say Yelling - by the two of them.
This would put me off ever going to Wimbledon to watch a game live - at least on TV I can turn down the sound. But all in all, I think it is really poor gamesmanship - simply trying to put off your opponent with a loud unnecessary noise |

I completely agree.
The only place for noises like that is in the bedroom. |

Keen tennis watchers aren't really bothered by the noise players make.
It's common place, part of the game and like traffic noise outside your window you get used to it although you're aware of it. If you don't like it you don't watch I guess. There's no way I'd want to miss any matches because of them screeching when they hit the ball. I'd say Maria Sharapova is the loudest but she's a great player to watch so it's not a problem to most. I remember Monic Seles starting this years ago and there was a huge carry on about it - but it hasn't stopped and is now part of the game. I love the tennis and every year Wimbledon is so enjoyable. |

Thank goodness it seems to be getting less. I only saw a small selection of matches but I was impressed by the number of girls who did not have to resort to shouting.
With Williams and Sharapova it is used just to intimidate their opponents . Very disappointed that a great champion like Sharapova has to resort to this unsporting tactic. |

I'm not a feminist, but I do think there's a double standard here. We're perfectly content to watch Nadal grunt his way through 5 hour matches like a war pig, but when a dainty female player does the same thing it provokes a reaction.
It might be gamesmanship in a handful of isolated cases, but I think that argument gets exaggerated. Tennis is full of arbitrary bits of etiquette/decorum and whenever someone breaches these standards they often get criticised. Instead of admitting that it offends our prudery, though, the criticism usually gets dressed up as if it has some tangible effect on who wins and loses the match. So grunting tends to be criticised on the grounds that it's gamesmanship designed to put off your opponent; or when Murray throws a tantrum on court Andrew Castle will object not because he looks like a petulant teenager, but because it supposedly "gives encouragement to his opponent". It's just a part of the game now (as it is in the men's game) and I don't honestly believe most women do it to put off their opponent. |
