HO - Joel's Accent
Is it just me or does anyone else find Joel's accent on HO slightly forced/annoying?
I am not slamming the actor, I just feel the accent has been slightly emphasized and I do like the character and think there is a lot more to him than what we already know. I am Scottish myself and whenever I hear an actor or a character with a Scottish accent, I sometimes feel like it has been put on slightly. This could be something to do with the fact that the rest of cast are mainly English/Irish and so this could make Joel's accent stand out a little more. |

Your scottish so maybe you can notice it more, like I am northern irish and found the accents sounded weird.
I find Joel's accent goes well with the character and he makes the scottish accent sound very sexy

I love Irish accents and Brendan has to be my favourite character all because of his accent. I suppose if there are a small handful of characters with a different accent from the rest of the cast I do feel they stand out which I suppose makes their character stand out so it can be a good thing. I just cringe when I hear the Scottish accent - especially on Jeremy Kyle but that's another story!! |

I cringe when I hear Cheryl and (heard) Lindsey...its just not good on the ear. Joel sounds fine, he just can't act very well!

I think it really is his accent it's just the Scottish accent is not made for tv. It's gotta be the worst one to try and listen to.

antonialouise93 I know what you mean, I think it just sounds a bit jarring mixed in with the manc accents that most of the rest of the cast have and because we're Scots, we pick up on it more because we're more used to it, I suppose. Having said that, Jack's accent never seems out of place but its less broad than Joel's really. A few years ago I used to watch River City and there was an English character (Cormac I think) on that and his accent really stood out in a way it wouldn't have if he had been on Hollyoaks. Its the same with Doug as well, I don't think I would notice it as much if PJ were on an American programme. Thats my theory anyway. |

I like his accent and think it adds to him as a character - it adds to all the other traits he has that makes him different which is good when he could just be another 'bad boy'!

Andrew in 'Neighbours' has the funniest one as it switches from Scottish to Australian and back again in every sentence! |

Keep in mind that this is Joel's first proper acting job.
He is learning as he goes along. As for his accent..to me doesnt seem like it's forced. Mmm maybe because in an interview you can understand him a bit but in Oaks lately I find myself having to rewind and all that. Maybe... |

I like his accent. I think it's charming. I don't think it's forced, or emphasized, at all; if anything, I think he's probably toning it down slightly, but not so much that it doesn't sound natural. Re the Glasgow accent being the 'strongest', there are broad Glasgow accents, cultured Glasgow accents and several degrees in between - same with Edinburgh accents, Aberdeen accents, and so forth. A very broad Glasgow accent probably does sound quite impenetrable to most non-Scots, just as a very broad Liverpool/Manchester/Birmingham accent can to many non-English people, although we non-English have more practice at deciphering English accents, as they are more prevalent on television and radio and in films. Joel's accent, as he uses it in Hollyoaks, is not the broadest by any means. Incidentally, I think he's a very good young actor, and I do agree that Brendan's accent is to die for.

I hate to admit it but sometimes i actually can't get a few words he says. Especially if he talks fast.

Andrew is from Glasgow which can be a very strong accent. I just have the feeling he has been told to enunciate his words more than he naturally would.

I find it slightly irritating too and even I'm Scottish. The Glasgow accent is a bit different to say the Edinburgh one or Dundee one, I can notice it but it's only maybe a bit deeper. It's weird to watch on TV but I think it's got something to do with it being his first job.. if that makes any sense

Yes, that's pretty much what I meant by 'toning it down slightly, but not so much that it doesn't sound natural'. Personally, I think that's the way to go, rather than trying to neutralize his accent. That would just make him sound/seem less natural, and he is quite a naturalistic actor, which I like. Besides, variety is the spice of life, in accents as in life generally.

Its ok, I was just crabbit. Thank god I can say that on here on a thread of people who will understand the word. The way it came across was that all of our accents didn't sound nice. I think it depends on the severity of it tbh, someone like David Tennant - I think he's from Paisley - he sounds nice on tv imo. I'm from Fife and, although my accent isn't bad, there are some Fife accents that are flamin awful. I reckon they would sound much worse on tele than a Glasgow one.

I like his accent, when he first arrived in Hollyoaks I found it hard to understand him but I understand him better now.

His accent does get stronger when he is angry/scared as does mine. I am from a different part of Scotland than him but I think he sounds fine.
