what is the best internet security. i use free avast and windows firewall at the moment

There is no best as it is all subjective.

I use Windows Firewall & Windows Defender with Panda Cloud, and top up with Malawarebytes & SUPERAntiSpyware

probably easier to make a list of the weaker &/or less trustworthy sources of security software -- eg avoid likes of Mcafee if you can

comodo firewall has a paranoid mode !

also consider drive sentry. restricts disk writes to trusted software.
