I don't know about ten seasons though. The show is suffering the same thing as Friends did - the actors becoming household names and wanting to do more movie roles and other jobs.
Stumbled across an interview with Josh Radnor from January 2012 where he says:
Quote:
You mentioned the notion of desperately wanting to do other things if you've been doing something for too long. In your perfect world, how much longer would you like "How I Met Your Mother" to last?
Well, we're only contracted for one additional season after this season. And that would take us to eight.

Is that what you want? Just one more?
It's a weird thing. Because I've kind of orientated the last seven years around being on the show. I know mid-August we start, we end early April. We have three weeks on, one week off every month. Two weeks for Thanksgiving. Three weeks for Christmas -- you know what I mean? I kinda know the drill. And it put me on a schedule that I actually find really appealing. So I know how to budget my time and I know how much time I have to make a movie, if I can do that. I can travel. The "ups" are a lot bigger than the "downs" on this thing. But it has to be a full-cast decision. We all have to be on board.

If Jason Segel left, you wouldn't continue?
I have no idea how that would look. We're such an ensemble that it would be hard to think of not having the five of us there.

Is that being set up at all with Marshall and Lily moving to Long Island?
No. I can tell you that's not. It's funny when I'm asked plot questions because they all blur together. And we sometimes shoot them out of order. And I'm so scrambled with what's aired and hasn't aired. So I don't really know.
From what I can gather:
Jason Segel wants to jump ship, but assuming the producers decide to end the show during it's 9th season he may be persuaded
Josh Radnor is 50/50 as to jumping ship
The show is unlikely to continue should Segel leave

Jason Segel's been hinting, since Season 4, that he wished to leave after Season 7, but I've also read, last year, that he was willing to see the show through to the end. If he DID leave though, they should cancel after Season 8 IMO.

I think that's obviously what would happen. They wouldn't continue for just one more season without one of the ensemble.

Logically they can only continue making the show for a limited time, the story is set in 2030, his kids must be 14-15 years old meaning they were born around 2015-2016; its currently 2012 so that just gives the writers 3-4 years. Ted of course has to meet the 'mother' before the kids are concieved therefore the identity will be revealed either next season or the one after.

I don't think I would care if Jason Segel left, imo he's the weak link of the cast and I haven't liked him since Season 3, coincidentally (or maybe not) around the same time Forgetting Sarah Marshall came out and his popularity increased.

As for the show ending,

Oops, didn't realise what thread this was, spoiler tagged it quickly after realising hope I didn't spoil anyone. The episode I refer to in the spoiler airs this Thursday.

The producers have already addressed the shows possible continuation after the mother reveal, can't find the link, but in an article on DS, either Bays or Thomas said that they could go back and do a series of one off stories, set in around 2005.

Also, they have said there is no definite end date yet, so I guess we'll have to wait till an official announcement.

Re:Jason Segel, a recent DS article seemed to suggest he plans to stay until the story reaches a natural conclusion.

I liked the announcer at the end - did you see that coming.

Yes, yes I did.

As this was a two-part episode (The Magician's Code), I have to say - it was brilliant.

May contain spoilers.

I liked that episode! Good finale! I guess that's Quinn's last appearence? or not? I was sort of expecting the reveal!

Looking forward to seeing season 8 soon but in the meantime...I'll enjoy watching repeats of season 2-6

I loved the finale episodes but I wish they'd both been shown back to back, it felt too short this way, quite rushed

Barney and Quinn seemed much better-suited for each other than Barney and Nora ever did. I'm not surprised at all that Barney proposed to her TBH, it seemed very natural.
