Old Chestnut

Primary channels 1-5 have AD (Audio Description) version as well as the High Def version

Anyone solved the old chestnut???

When wishlists have a choice why doi some Tivos record from AD channels and some Tivos record wishlists from HD channels

I'm wondering whether it's 1TB (old software) vs 1/2 TB (new software)

It's a hunch but it could be to do with there being several different regional variations for channels 101-105. The AD channels are the same for everyone in different regions.

Well I've got "1/2 TB" and my wishlists often record AD, seems to choose the highest channel number

thats what I thought - and it is documented that that is the way Tivo wishlists work - but I've seen posted evidence of some Tivo choosing to record from HD variants of Main channels 1-5

So it still remains a Tivo enigma

Why would you think the Tivo's use different software?

The only difference is the size of the hard drive.

Mine varies - sometimes it chooses the HD channels, sometimes the AD, and sometimes the regular.

Mine always chooses AD (which i dont want) but on very rare occasions records from HD

On U.S. Tivo you can disable some channels (AD) so wishlists dont use them - this feature is not available on VM Tivo which is a shame

I dont think anyone actually knows why it behaves this way

How come when it does record from the AD channels you don't actually get the audio description?

I think that all progs are "Mirrored by the AD channels, but only a few have "AD" in the same way as not all progs on HD channles are HD.

So yours records from both - same as mine. Like you I would prefer it to record the HD version. For some programmes I have wishlist (set up before the programmes appear in the guide) then when they do appear I set up a Series Link on the HD channel - it still records the wrong one!

You have to manually select the AD soundtrack

Why don't you include "hd" as a search term in your wishlist?

It's just one of them things that no matter how many times you ask, it won't get answered. I've tried before.

I think it's something to do with allowing TiVo to choose the best quality channel by automatically selecting the highest channel number. In the early days of TiVo when people had both an analogue and a digital TV service running side by side this meant TiVo would choose the digital variant if faced with a choice of channels which were, in essence, a simulcast of each other. That,as far as I know, is the answer to your question. The best work around I can suggest is two wishlists for the*same thing, but include "hd" as a search term in one of them and set that one as a higher priority than the other. Of course, what's really required is for TiVo to recognise things have moved on.

I have 1 Eastenders wishlist which records from BBC One HD with no HD category set and 1 CSI wishlist which records from Channel 5 HD with no HD category set. So in those cases it does not record the highest channel number.

i am not the only one.

Sorry to be a pedant but it is actuality rather than just a claim. However I will concede that I can see no reason why boxes in different households would choose a different channel for a wishlist recording. For the record (no pun intended) I set up wishlists for Euro 2012 on both my boxes and without fail both recorded on BBC 1 HD and STV HD, even though the games were shown on the SD channels at the same time.
Set up a Wishlist to NOT record HD

I can't explain this.

almost - but that doesn't explain why some have reported recording from HD channel instead of AD channel

hence the enigma

That is a fair point. FWIW I believe TiVo at least did operate in this way once, clearly given the point you make it doesn't any longer. I can now only assume that it's down to space management-does anybody have any data with regards to how much space (%) was available/how many recordings were planned at each display of different behavior by their TiVo?

Nope - I can confirm that HD recordings are not space related (my 1TB has never been more than 57% full)

Every 'logical' avenue has been explored (to death) - it seems to rely on a pure 'glitch' - I would like to replicate it if anyone ever discovers the specific circumstances

What surprises me is that millions of users lobbied VM to carry more channels in HD (never really bothered me) and those same users are quite content to accept SD (actually AD) recordings from Tivo wishlists

Sorta suggests most users can't really tell the difference between HD/SD - they just want to 'appear' to be more discerning viewers

Shame really because VM now have no motive to spend one hour putting the software glitch right
