What is Blackpool like?

I have never been and want to go when the illuminations are on.

Can anyone advise on good things to do?

Do they still have the pleasure beach with "The Big One" rollercaster?

It all depends on what you made of the experience. I thought it was just like Blackpool.

My in-laws stopped there on the way back from the Lake District with 2 of my kids. They were really unimpressed and said it was full of fat people walking around eating chips and burgers.

Blackpool has a certain charm. Its far from upper class but lots of people do enjoy it. There is a hell of a lot of money being spent on doing it up too. The prom is looking brilliant.

Sept-Nov when the lights are on is quite nice. It certainly makes a change from where you would usually visit.

The pleasure beach is still there, there are three piers to visit (two with rides on), the sandcastle is really fun, the tower has just had loads of money put into it too so also has a dungeon experience.

The prom is still tacky as hell, but like I say it has a certain charm.

It seriously needs doing up. The prom yes it's nice not finished yet though. Have to get bus through the town centre every day minus weekends for work, and it's just so horrible. Also what hell have they done to Blackpool tower.

I went about 4 years ago because I had never been to see the Illuminations. Talk about a damp squib. I was so disappointed.

All the women are bright orange and they all have scary black arched eyebrows.

Fish and chips were the biggest rip off ever and the soggiest and palest I've had anywhere in my life.

We knew when we went it wasn't going to be a place of beauty and we expected to see Kiss Me Quick Hats and Candy Floss and Bingo but it was much, much worse than that. Dire in fact.

It's like a large seaside resort on the north west coast of England.
In fact, that's what it is.

I went end of last year and have been the previous two years.

I really like the Pleasure Beach theme park, there's a huge amount of rides, particularly rollercoasters, and it's not too expensive to go in either.

The Blackpool Tower is now a ripoff though as it has been taken over by Merlin Entertainments Group (the people that own Alton Towers, Thorpe Park etc) They've got rid of the free Aquarium they had there as they've opened up a Sealife Centre down the road, which annoyed me.

The rest of Blackpool I try to avoid, it's full of people on tacky hen and stag parties. The pubs are always full to overflowing and people just walk round p**sed all day

Back when it used to be the done thing to go and stay in a caravan for your holiday, it was brilliant. But as more and more families went to Europe for their hols.. it declined as a result and is a shadow of it's former self.

Went there lastyear won'[t be rushing back. The street up the seafront was lined with rosie lees wanting to tell your fortune, Mentioned in another thread that we were eating chips outside and a chubby lady was in a horse and round carraige on a hen do and she lifted her top up and started jiggiling her boobs and wobbly bits. My mums husband nearly chocked.
Madame tussards was good though.

Me and my parents were discussing what Blackpool is like during lunch earlier today, and they insist that despite what people say about how rubbish Blackpool is, (including on these forums on Digital Spy), Blackpool is great!

Used to go every year, fond memories of being a kid, donkey-rides n sandcastles through to teenage roller coaster rides, followed by raucous hen weekends, and then taking my own kid to see the illuminations... Last time I was there tho, we watched in horror as a drunken thug punched a horse in the face before trying to climb on its back... Not been since
