I should also mention Minecraft. Hours go by and you realize you've just basically futzed about not really doing much but being greatly absorbed as you farm, mine, spellunk, and just amble about exploring. For such a simple game it has such hidden depths, both literally and figuratively.

Still Battlefield Bad Company 2 for me. Battlefield 3 is just too Call of Duty-ish for me.

BFBC2 is totally different from any multiplayer shooty bang bang game I've played. It does help that it seems I'm pretty good at it too...

Think I'm about all played out on it now though. Being on Borderlands 2.

Same here. I got it recently and haven't been able to play anything else. Only got it on the PS3 though. Bloody awesome game!

It has to be Civilization - the daddy of all addictive, time-sinking games.

But honorable mentions go to:
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Jungle Strike
Secret of Mana
FF IV + VII
Super Mario Kart

I think after Borderlands, it would Burnout Paradise (on 360 and PS3)

Currently on the iPad it's got to be Plague Inc

Everquest (1) here, spent all my gaming hours on it from release to about 2004,and quite a few non gaming hours. Was doing silly things like playing through the night weekends, and generally planning my life around raids and such. Scary thing is that I know people from those days still playing the game religiously, I dread to think of the percentage of their lives spent on it.
