Carol Vorderman's Engineering Degree from Cambridge is...

...third class; so, not quite genius material.

So?

It's still a degree.

I've seen you or a poster with a similar style () make the exact same point before.

What is your point? (In every sense of the question)

I was a bit surprised, that's all. Tv touts Vorderman as a great brain, but she is only so in tv land.

Also, she scored 154 in an IQ test, so you might expect her to have got a first.

I narrowly missed out on a first, but I still think Carol's 3rd Class Engineering Degree from Cambridge would knock spots off my 2:1 in English Lit from notCambridge. Sigh.

Yes it is. It's still a degree, and a fine accomplishment.

Can I just point out that IQ tests are very rarely indicators of actual intelligence and having a high IQ in no way means a first/ 2:1 degree (especially at Cambridge!) is a given.

Carol Vorderman graduated from Cambridge at the age of 20. I think she had a pretty tough time growing up: financially, and otherwise: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...n-met-dad.html

Degrees require hard work as well as intelligence. A lot of other factors are involved - money worries, health problems, other stress factors. I don't think you can write someone off because of their classification.

Many Oxford and Cambridge courses are mostly based on the exams taken in Finals week. People don't always do themselves justice if they get too tired or stressed.

...or were too bust with "outside interests" over the three year degree course.

To get a Cambridge first you must be bright AND work hard.

She might be a lazy genius, but then I don't know what the qualifying standard for "genius" is.

I dont think she IS touted as a great brain, She seems quite happy to appear on celebrity quizzes and panel games and doesnt come over as any brainier than the next person. She has a gift for mental arithmetic and is making the most of the celebrity Countdown gave her. Get off her case.

Not really a big fan of Carol Vorderman, but in her defence, I've never heard her claim to be any sort of genius. As Musselmann says, she has an apitude for arithmetic, and if I had had the opportunity that she had on Countdown, I would have grabbed it with both hands.

She graduated from Cambridge, for goodness sake. Whether it was a 3rd class honours degree or not, that's a pretty impressive thing to do. She certainly didn't get into Cambridge due to family money or connections, or anything like that.

If you compare her to many other people on TV she probably does appear to be a genius.

It is not nice to look down on people like that. There can be many reasons why she got a third. When she graduated, a lot fewer "firsts" were awarded in those days.

..A lot of bitter hatred for the Vordster as usual, must be from bitter housewives who still have to do their lousy 9 to 5s and feed their feckless litter or offspring.

I agree I'm not really fan of her either although I thought she was great on Countdown but I've never heard her claim she's a genius.........there are are many celebs who make inflated, untrue claims for themselves or get their PR people to do it for them and they are rightly criticised for it. However, I don't think Carole's claimed anything other than she has a high IQ which is true and that she's very good at maths which is also true............and getting into Cambridge and graduating at 20 is an extremely impressive achievement especially considering she had set backs in her childhood.

A nice bit of sexism always takes the higher moral ground.

Carol Vorderman`s Engineering degree

Why all this comment about Carol`s degree? Does it really matter what grade her degree was? What is important is that she has become one of the most popular, attractive and wealthy females on British TV. She had never said that she is brainy but her career has proved that she has something very special. Leave it alone please.

She's said before that she got a third as she didn't work very hard and she spent most of her time partying. Fair enough, that's what tons of people do at that age. I don't think having a third is any sort of indication of her intelligence. It hasn't held her back in any way either so who cares.
