Any of those are better than Cruise though. And I really like Tom Cruise. It's a shame that they chose to go with a big name star as that probably means a big pay packet and the need to make more money at the box office. Even though I'm a fan of the books, they're really pretty standard tough guy vs bad guy fare. I can't really see this being a big box office hit and spawning a franchise of of it. Now if they'd gone with a less well known actor (who looked more the part) and a smaller budget, I think it would have been more likely we'd see a series of Reacher movies. |

Saw the trailer...
...looks terrible. Cruise is just being Cruise. It's like Ethan Hunt has been dropped in - does Cruise ever even do a different voice? As soon as I heard him speak, it was clear that he wasn't bringing anything new or different. If they wanted to make a film about a brown haired, 5'6" former homicide detective who likes fast cars then they could have done that and called him whatever. Why is this supposed to be Reacher? I think a better route would have been to go down the US cable series route. They have the same production values as most movies and you could have had a series of 2 or 3 parters based on the books, with an actor who can 'become' Jack Reacher. This film just seems pointless and I have never been so irritated watching a trailer! |

It wouldn't be quite so bad if every book didn't make repeated comment on Reacher's size and appearance. It gets laughable in some of the books, how frequently the author feels the need to reinforce this image. So anyone who has read the books, and I have read a fair few of them, has this image in mind and probably has spent an idle moment or two casting him in an imaginary film. In any potential short list I am sure Cruise would never, ever appear. The idea is so ridiculous, the trailer comes across as a comedy film trailer.
If Lee Child is happy with it all, all I can think it must be a case of being extreme star-stricken, a huge rights cheque or a sudden absoption into the Church of Scientology and he is 'just following orders'. |

Excellent stuff. Just what I have always wanted. Filmakers pissing all over a favourite literary character of mine. Lee Child hang your head in shame because you attempted to justify this sad miscasting with explanations of metaphor instead of fighting your corner.
Ray Stevenson was and should have been the man for the job. Oh well. It all fits I suppose. Child says he named his (anti)hero Reacher because Child had difficultly in reaching up to get groceries on the highest shelf of the supermarket.....something him and Cruise would share I guess. |

Seems as though a whole lot of money was thrown at Lee Child and he thought 'ah sod it'. This is just feeding Cruises ego, and it's not as if he doesn't already have a successful blockbuster franchise anyway. |

His wife said "If the writing career doesn't take off, you could always get a job as a reacher." He liked the name and gave it to his as-yet-unnamed character. |

Against my better judgement, I watched the new trailer.
Awful. Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise. Delivering every line like Tom Cruise in the Tom Cruise voice. Could be any other of his "characters". Would have been good if he had just said "look, I love the character but I am not right for this role". We could then have an actor who would get in character and portray Reacher as he is in the books. The dialogue was awful too - "on second thought, I would really like to kill you"

^ The new trailer is pretty rank, isn't it.
Cruise can largely pull it off in the fantasy world of M:I, but you stiffle a titter at 'gritty' tough guy Tom. And that awful jokey bit with the cap at the end seemed a different tone entirely. |
