winmail.dat

I have a problem in that a particular contact regularly sends me pdf files. They get forwarded to my gmail account where the attachments arrive intact. However, when I download them onto my thunderbird clients, the attachment has turned into winmail.dat (5kb).

From googling it seems that most times the winmail.dat file indicates a problem with the sender, but in this case gmail receives the files ok.

The issue is the same on two separate thunderbird clients, and I receive other attachments without problem, it is just this one contact of mine.

Any ideas? The files are not big nor is there anything else special about them that I can think of...

Have you tried changing winmail.dat to winmail.pdf. That might change it back to pdf format.

I had a client tell me that emails I sent him always had a winmail.dat attachment when I sent him emails from Outlook. The formatting always seemed screwed up too. I fixed it at my end via this Microsoft support article
