Waking away from your wireless router
Ever tried walking away from your router carrying our mobile or iPad or whatever to see how far you can go before you're out of range and lose the connection?
I can't try that out cos I live on the 4th floor and can't float...... Just wondering how far out you can go (without getting funny looks from neighbours, etc)

1) It's walking, not waking
2) why don't you just go down the stairs and find out? |

I've taken my iPod Touch outside the door while it's connected to the Wifi and it works standing at the front of the house, but by the time I get to the end of the road I no longer get a signal. It also works if I'm sitting in the car outside the house. I've used my 'pod in the car some mornings while waiting for my dad as he drives me in and out of university every day. Never walked around outside with my Mac though

I can get to the beer garden of the pub across the road (which is where I am now).

My router, in the living-room, hard up against a radiator, is fine out past the dining room and into the Conservatory and patio.
Speed drops a bit. Brick in-fill walls in my 1930s semi. I must be lucky or have a good wireless router. |

Useful for quickly checking signal strength and dead spots in and around the home. Even more useful for checking channel conflicts with neighbour's routers. |

I can't even go upstairs without it dropping out constantly and slowing to a crawl (my net connection is slow as hell anyway without the wireless making it worse). I detest my router.

with my old router I could get a couple of houses down the road or across the road and then it would fade off, with the new one when I got it on full power I can get across the road and down a little allyway or about 6 houses down.
But my new router is now set on it's lowest power output, but it still goes outside the house. |

Inssider is a good channel tool for seeing what your neighbours are on (and finding an empty space for yourself).
--------- I hate the v2 flat frequency responses though. Inssider v1 had nice 'sine' wave responses, looks so much better. Can still be found if you hunt for half an hour on Google but it doesn't really matter unless you are bothered. |

I can get to about half way down my back garden on my router before it drops off. I added a second wireless access point at the back of my house and now I can watch the signal strength drop 3,2,1 then pop back up at 3
