However, from a viewers point of view, why muck up the schedules on 2 channels (4 if you count HD) when you could keep the disruption to just 1 (2 if you count HD) channels.

I thought Greg Rusedski was British, but he speaks like an American, so he must have been living 'over there' for most of his life.

I see that the EastEnders fans are happy that their soap hasn't been interupted although some are calling for it to be at 8pm. I think they should be greatful that they have an episode tonight seeing as its a Wednesday.

Barclays ATP World Tour Finals

The BBC have signed a new contract to show the world finals this year and next.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/18713626

May not be a long contract but it's a good little hold for the BBC. That's the event I thought they would give up on but it seems they may have got it dirt cheep.

No news on the future of the Australian Open though I presume they will drop it completely.

1st. part of match on BBC1, as scheduled, fine.
Time for the news, and the BBC now have next to no regionalisation on BBC2, so the tennis switches to BBC2/BBC HD.
The tennis fans duly switch channel, as scheduled, again no problem.
BBC regional news finishes, decision taken to ignore the programme scheduling and shift the tennis to BBC1 and BBC1 programmes to BBC2.
The problem: both tennis fans and non tennis fans alike have to change channel to watch the programme they want.
As there is nowhere in the country that can receive BBC1 but not BBC2 this just seems complete madness.
Maybe, as someone's already posted, this is a legacy procedure from the early days of BBC2 when it was first broadcast on UHF 625 lines, when the majority of viewers only had BBC1 on VHF 405 lines.

I think these are secondary rights, similar to the F1 deal?

I assume Sky will broadcast every match live as part of the deal. The BBC's simulcast matches will mostly be in the afternoons, which explains why the contract didn't cost them much.

This event always seems like a bit of an end of season party, with preparation for the Australian season being more important for the players.

Yes it seems to be secondary rights. But I like the Fact the BBC are showing it. It's more sport on the BBC.

The BBC has the Australian Open until 2016 going by Wikipedia although they don't show it in full sadly.

Its good that the BBC has kept the ATP tour finals even if it is limited. Although they lost the French Open, the Beeb still have decent coverage of tennis I ust wish they show the Australian Open.

They're not exclusive rights though, right? ESPN/Sky Sports/Eurosport can show the event more comprehensively, as far as I'm aware.

Based on what happened with the ladies semi-finals, it'll start on BBC 2 and then move to BBC 1 when the programme starts at 1:45pm.

(BBC 2 will then probably show doubles until that coverage ends at 3:25pm.)

The question is, if Murray is still going at 6pm, will they keep the tennis on BBC1? I know they left the news unchanged on Wednesday but I think this time the tennis may take priority.

I think they will keep Murray on BBC1, with the News at Six being shown on BBC2 and Regional News being moved to 8:30pm on BBC1.

The issue of the regional news would not be a problem if Murray was first on court for a change....I think this is his fourth semi-final? Was he first on court for any of the other three? Talk about chasing ratings, the BBC seem to have way too much influence over the schedule in that they nearly always get Murray matches running into primetime. Why don't the organisers put him on first for once?

Why don't they make him play on court 2? He's not a former champion.

TV coverage, like scheduling, is dictated by public demand.

Murray is the star of prime-time.

I think the future of this depends on if the O2 holds the event. Got the impression that he LTA wanted a FTA partner to publicise that the ATP Finals were in London.

As to Australia suspect it will be similar to this year with finals only. Lets face it the BBC only really did 'night sessions' or British interest aka Andy Murray until this year.

Eurosport have the rights until 2017. 2012 was start of a 5 year deal.

Because...
a) this is not football, folk come from across the country for a bit if tennis
b) 1pm is lunch and most of Andys fans are doing the Salmon sandwiches. so he goes on late and they see him
c) the good workers of the UK doing 9-5 get in their cars and want to hear his match either on Centre or Court One
d)give people a chance to be ripped off (sorry buy souveniers)
e) and of course after the Pimms to refresh the vocal chords they will shout more

Do you have proof that the BBC have influenced the Wimbledon authorities with regard to their scheduled order of play? Any chance that it's the All England Tennis Club that has decided that Order of Play, and that it is they who have decided that Murray's matches go on court at that time (for a variety of reasons)?

Behave, the host broadcaster will have a say in it, it is ridiculous to think otherwise.

The main problem with the constant switching happens when people are out at work, as we do, and we try and predict which match will be on which channel to record it!

It is almost impossible, will it be on BBC1?, BBC2?, Red Button?, will it switch mid match? I know sport is better watched 'live' so you can change channel, but a lot of tennis fans do have to go to work during the two weeks.

It's lucky that the BBCi satellite streams are all on one transponder cos I have to resort to recording all of them. Would be nice if they at least had a general guideline as to which matches will be on which channels but I guess that's not really the point of the red button streams.
