New console - Ouya

Looks like there's a new console on the horizon called Ouya.

It will run on the Android OS and It will be cheap, at just $99. The games will be free, which I guess could mean ad supported. It will also be completely hackable, meaning anyone with the technical knowledge will be able to release games for it.

It's not going to compete with Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo in terms of graphics capabilities or big name titles, but could bring some interesting new concepts to your TV.

One to watch?

I don't think I'd want one but it does look like a good idea, as the article says it beats buggering about with cables from your phone or tablet. Not sure about the design though, it doesn't look like the sort of thing that would sit well under the tele.

rather have Onlive myself. Get the console for free if you pre-order a game say a Darksiders 2. Really dont see the point of this especially as google are going to be pushing GTV

I don't see what is so special about this.

Just looks like an Android 'mini PC' with a custom market.

I'd presume a decent GPU compared to the cheap Chinese Android 'mini PCs' will be the only draw.

I don't see this being popular as a console, but as an Android device - yeah sure, not too bad compared to the inflated prices of the Chinese equivalents at the moment.

But I fail to see why a developer would suddenly have the urge to make a game for it, when they can release it to the official Android market...

3.1 million in the first day, so It's happening It will be interesting to see how it does. Not something I could see myself buying though.

I don't get its popularity.

As a gaming console - nut uh. As a mini PC. Yeah, maybe.

I mean if you look at those 'Android on a stick' products, they are around the $75 mark and weak specs wise compared to this.

Only trouble is, it isn't on a stick. It looks like a, comparatively, massive cube.

I sense from reading about that some people think it will have amazing exclusive games, but the fact is, it won't. It'll just have Android games as that is the platform it runs.

It isn't a new platform, it is a new device that is essentially a mobile device without the mobile-ness and a screen but with a controller added in.

There are a few 'good' games out there but only a few. And even then they're games you dip in and out of when you're waiting for dinner to cook or bored at lunch and I don't know that you'd wanna load a console up for that.

If you do just get a console and get some XBLA games or PS Minis.

There won't be mega blockbuster games with a 4 hour storyline or compelling multiplayer.

And furthermore if you are a developer you would not want to limit yourself to their marketplace, you'll stick it on the Android Market too. And if you can get it on your phone - do you really want to go play it on your TV too?

But back to the mini PC idea - yeah, it is not bad and if I didn't have a Smart TV, I would consider it.

Sounds like it will be good for emulation and homebrew.

That depends on popularity. If this takes of and does well, developers might risk making somthing for the controller in mind, rather than all the games on APP store /Play store being more touch screen controls.

Chances are not likely but it's not impossible, stranger things have happened in the gaming industry. I'm shocked myself, and did not expect them to get that much support in only a day.

You can request what games you would like to see here.

Android already has an OnLive app, which could easily be ported to the Ouya - two gaming systems in one.

If you want a cheap console buy a PS2

Cheap PS2s - kill every discounted console idea straight off - console for poorer parts of Asia - they buy PS2s

First exclusive game announced http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...e/posts/270629
Not out till 2015 so it could be dead in water by then but it's start I suppose.

Yep Onlive is confirmed. Wonder when EA will be confirmed as Madden is featuring in nearly all the screenshots

I still think it is funny that people are buying into this hype.

VEVO, FF3, Madden... all these are on Android already and Android 'consoles' exist, and you can even buy USB drive-sized sticks that go in your HDMI port.

No need for a box by the TV.

The only selling point is the graphics chip.

The Reddit AMA transcript is here http://teamouya.com/?p=223

Chopoff for £70 you can really complain and you can get Onlive on it for you "AAA" games. This is the console for the masses where the entry barrier is very low and there will be free games for people to play.

The low end Xbox isn't much more. In fact somewhere had it up on offer for £99 the other day.

It is priced OK, that isn't the issue. The issue is that it isn't anything special.

All the games confirmed so far are already playable on Android consoles that are on the market now and for less money.
