Good but simple video editing software?

I am looking for some video editing software to edit a few home videos and was wondering which software would be best to use? I don't want anything too complicated as my parents would be using it, it's not for me. I do have access to Adobe Premiere and After Effects but I have a feeling these are complicated to use for editing home videos?

Why not give them a try? The same could be said for Photoshop but in reality, despite it having one of the most horrible and unintuitive interfaces around, Photoshop doesn't require one to know and use all the tools and capabilities that it offers.

I've persevered with Ulead (now Corel) VideoStudio, mainly because it came free with an old camera. It's pretty easy to use, but I I've looked at others and they are all pretty similar:-

- import video from camera or file
- mark the -in and -out points of each clip and drag it onto the timeline
-add transition effects, titles and soundtracks.

When it's done you save - either as a video file of various formats or burn to DVD

I find iMovie HD (version 6) is quite simple to use.

I used it to make a DVD of my nephew's wedding a few weeks ago and everyone was impressed.

Isn't iMovie 6 a pretty old version of iMovie? I've got iMovie '09 as it came with my Macbook Pro. Thinking of getting Final Cut Pro X though. OP if you're interested in using Adobe Premiere isn't there an Elements version around, like there is for Photoshop?

You could download a full 30 day working trial of Sony Vegas HD studio and see how you get on with it (I did then purchased from Amazon)

Otherwise there's good old free MS movie maker as mentioned already or many others.

I agree, I made a wedding video using it... eventually. Luckily, your original files are unchanged, so you can always start again.

However, i found the tutorials seemed to cover only small parts of how to use it. I couldn't find anything giving an overview, for example the relationship between the various files which are created. Or whether you could merge projects (I certainly couldn't find a way to do it).

But it definitely gives you a grasp of the basic steps in video editing.
