How does this work? Can you just start a fresh game and players will randomly join your game and help out? Does it effect any part of the story? Will be playing it for the first time from the start so I don't want anything to be ruined.

People can join straight in when you get past the intro. I found some people like to rush and do quests so you may find by the time you get to the quest giver they have already done it. try playing with people around your level and you be fine
