When she has Adele 21 sales in the US or even Leona Spirit sales or 1D Up All Night sales, thats when everyone can brag.
I'm not a fan of her in the slightest, I just remember that she was the only one who seemed to have a realistic chance of a being a genuine pop star from that season. It's just interesting to see how these things pan out.

That's a ridiculous comment. Any US success is remarkable for a UK act - ask Take That, ask Robbie, ask Oasis, as Westlife.

Just because you find the comment challenging to your perceptions does not make it a ridiculous comment.

It is a perfectly fair comment to make.

And Take That had a top 10 platinum selling hit in the US, which Cher hasn't done yet (although she almost certainly will do soon).

I really had to hunt for that. It's not on their main discography (I was using Wikipedia). My point still stands that any US success she has is important. Especially someone that came 4th or 5th in the XF two years ago.

2010 was a great year for XF. The success of Cher, Rebecca and One Direction only go to underline that.

Yes, I agree with your point but I think that the fact that Take That had more US success than Cher (currently) has yet are used as an example of an act that tried to crack the US and failed while Cher is being congratulated for her 'remarkable' US success is quite telling. In a few years Cher may be regarded like Take That (with respect to the US), or she may not*. Being considered a US success clearly takes more than one single though.

*Actually, I think she has a good chance of having a successful album there.

I'm sorry but who are you to tell me its a ridiculous comment, when it clearly isn't?

Point taken. You 're not wrong. She's not there yet, not even remotely in 1D's league let alone Adele, and I agree a bit a perspective is good, as is balance.

That said, several of us are feeling mild relief as clearly she's in a way better position career wise in terms of second albums etc (beyond that who can tell?) than she was six weeks ago.

Supporting Cher is a bit like supporting an unfashionable football club, why go through the grief and brickbats to stick up for them when the club across town win the European Cup or whatever. But when the odd bit of light in the darkness arrives you are entitled to celebrate. It might well not last, it might be the only time you feel it. So Adele she ain't, but don't be too hard on those of us holding up a tattered standard cos we think it's right, if only (as in my case) to stick it to the mindless jaundiced so and so's out there in Daily Mail land who would accuse her of something even if she saved drowning kittens from Niagra Falls live on TV

Yep, agree with what you've said, anyway like I've said in another post on another thread, a huge congrats to Cher because, like you said, she is in a much better position now and she has done really well to go top 5 on US Itunes

What you say is true and I agree with all of it. I think it is remarkable for her - you know her story as well as I do: going to bits at Judges houses, bratty atittude, controversially going further in the competition than Tesco Mary... and so on and etc. To go from that to ANY success in the US is remarkable. And I wish her well.
