Not good PR for Google if other suppliers are jumping the gun. This release does sound badly organised - why don't they just give an official release date instead of keeping everyone guessing?

As far as I know they both use H264.

On these newer devices the main cause of stutter is ISP related.
HTML 5 still needs proprietary technologies to protect content so it ain't exactly the future.
IOS has an advantage being a closed proprietary system and thus can thus do pseudo-DRM.

HTML 5 totally fails because it “lacks robust content protection”.

It is no shock that Microsoft, Google and even Netflix are supposedly working on a replacement for Flash.
Disconnected proprietary systems is the way it might go.
Obviously some prefer be winner takes all like we had with Sky and UK satellite

The lack of communication is the worst part about this. The not knowing if it'll ship today, tomorrow, next week and so forth, whilst Google just remains silent about the whole thing.

Silverlight? Not exactly a roaring success IMHO.

Yes, it's infuriating. At least other manufacturers (mentioning no names ) tell you in advance when someone will be out. Google need to sort it out and make some sort of announcement. Silence is not good enough!

Why are people getting so worked up about a few days of uncertainty? Does it really matter that much?

Of course if does. Some people ordered from Ebuyer yesterday afternoon and have their tablets this morning. Whereas others who ordered from Google/elsewhere 2 weeks ago have no idea when theirs will arrive. Google are handling this badly and need to announce when the tablet will be released. If they'd done things properly, there would be no uncertainty. With technology, it's all about getting your hands on it asap!

Google, Microsoft and Netflix all are backing a proposal called Encrypted Media Extension which will very likely go though soon http://dvcs.w3.org/hg/html-media/raw...ted-media.html

If so HTML5 will offer great DRM for content providers.

it did yeah.

it says it on the device when you first switch it on. so i'm guessing it doesn't matter where you buy it.

Aha, I've just discovered that Play Store is the new name for Android Market and nothing to do with Play.com. I wonder if this has confused anyone else?

Play store isn't a very good name, IMO. Unless of course it only sells games.

I just spoke to Google about my order and it apparently can't be cancelled as it has now progressed to the dispatch stage. The guy I spoke to said I would be getting a tracking number by email shortly, and said it was TNT delivering it.

The only option for cancellation (without paying to send it back to them) is to reject the shipment, but even then it would take 14 days for the refund to be processed.

It seems we've paid the extra £9.99 shipping for nothing... we're not getting the device first and the Play Store voucher isn't exclusive.

You can play movies, TV shows and music too... but yes, it isn't the best naming choice they've ever made.

It would have been the perfect name for RIM's store for the Playbook.

Really? I couldn't even get through to the number....I sent an email requesting cancellation but have heard nothing back! The £9.99 shipping is a joke and I now refuse to pay this money having seen Ebuyer offer free delivery....

On my account it doesn't say my order has progressed to the dispatch stage, though I might have to give them a call again....which number did you call?

Success or not, Microsoft will have little interest in supporting non-Windows platforms.

Where do you go to find the status of your order? I have looked at my orders on google play and it doesn't give you a status - it just says I have purchased it. No estimated delivery or anything....

I want mine now! Very jealous of Flagpole!

wallet.google.com lists the purchase and order status. And there's a contact number and an email forum to request cancellation....I tried ringing the number +353 (1) 436 1001 but it just said the number had changed, and there isn't anywhere else to call....
