Why would you want a cat? why instead of a dog?
there seems to be a trend with females having cats as pets.
Why would you want a cat? dogs seem much more fun, are usually cuter. Aren't cats boring and introverted animals? |

They are fun, they play games, they know when you are upset, they snuggle up with you on a cold night, they keep your home free from pests. Cats are a good investment. |

Cats are independent and self-sufficient, they don't depend on humans for their survival and their entertainment like dogs do, so I have more respect for cats than I do for dogs . Also dogs smell, cats don't. Also, dogs sh*t and wee wherever they feel like it; cats dig a hole, poo and wee in it and cover it over.
I regularly house-sit for a friend who has two labradors. They are nice enough dogs, but every time I try to sit down for a cuppa and a biscuit they sit as close as they can, slobbering and breathing dog breath all over me - really bad mannered! Also, when I come downstairs in the morning and let them into the kitchen (from the utility room where they sleep), one of them jumps up at me and puts his dirty feet all over my jim-jams. I know it's probably my friend's fault for not teaching them any manners, but they drive me insane! I'd rather have cats any day! They get on with their lives and don't follow me around all day begging for attention!

I'd be happy with either, but the reason I don't have dogs is I personally feel it would not be fair on the pets themselves
If i lived in a more quiet/rural area I'd definatly go with dogs But between lack of space (home/garden) Few walking options, 2 parks in walking distance but ones being redeveloped into housing and the others semi-private with sport pitches/courts and a bowling green and locally considered not really a walking friendly spot Aside from that its finding the 2/3 hours to take them out.. the best I could offer right now is a 30-60 minute jog in the morning and evening I just don't feel it would be fair or in the dogs interests health' wise to have them here with those things in mind Theres just no open landmass/green area here you could take them off the lead for 5 mins and let them be themselves Kinda bemuses me when you see people with athletic breeds that are stuck in concrete jungle living on a lead and you can naturally see the animal isn't happy Whenever I relocate again, or down the road when I'm older I'll probably review/reconsider again |

"cats don't smell"? Now dogs aren't the freshest beasts out there, but my dogs arse doesn't smell of shite, where as the visiting cat's under-tail area bloody reeks!
and that's not the only smelly cat i've met. and not all cats bury their "leavings" i've seen a fair few, stop on a lawn, squat, evacuate, then saunter off without a care in the world! Dogs are far more neighbourly than cats too, usually just crapping in their own garden, rather than jumping over the fence to go crap in next doors! |

i'm not, another "fun" thing cats seem to like to do is put their sphincter much, much closer to your face than you would ever like it to be.
and the tail straight in the air so their button is always just there winking at you? urgh. i don't mind cats. i quite like the one who visits, but i'd much prefer him to keep his butt away from me, though when he follows me to the (usually wet) field when i take the dog over, there's no avoiding it. considering he doesn't like standing on the wet grass, so climbs up & sits on my shoulders

I love both cats and dogs and appreciate their very different ways. Cats are more subtle in their affections than dogs but they are affectionate. Clever and playful too, in their feline way. My cat practically talks to me!
It's fine that you prefer dogs but is it really necessary to trash the felines? They, like dogs, have been human companions for thousands of years and have brought much pleasure to the people they live with. That's why people have them in their homes. |

Cats are best for people who like low-maintenance pets.
Just chuck them out and they look after themselves. They can crap in the neighbours' gardens and there's not a thing they can do do. If they complain, just tell them that cats are "free-spirits" and that the law allows them to roam free wherever they choose. Dogs need lots of care and attention and you have to pick up their poo if anyone's around. |

you should pick it up anyway, not just if someone is around...
didn't intentionally trash cats though, dogs have received as much stick in this thread from the cat lovers. bottom line is that i don't mind cats & i'd never harm one, but i'd just never have one as a pet. they don't really appeal to me. Dog person through and through i suppose. |

When I was younger, I could never see the appeal of cats or dogs. I had a few bad experiences with dogs, being bit/chased so have always been scared of them.
My little sister has always adored cats where as I wasn't really that interested. That all changed 3 years ago when we were adopted by a gorgeous ginger tabby. He is the most beautiful, sweet natured, lovable boy who has every member of the family wrapped around his little paw including my Dad who was always more of a dogs person. |

We have had both, but in a flat it's fairer we find to just have the dogs as we can get them out and about, If we were in a house with a garden in a reasonable area we would have both again. They are very different to each other but both wonderful animals who relate to us in different ways.

I've had cats all my life ever since I was a baby so it's just something that has happened. My Dad had a dog when he was growing up, I think he still wants one but my Mum prefers cats hence why we have always had cats. Also as I child we moved abroad/around every two years so it was easier to have cats who we could leave with relatives/friends while we were abroad and get them back when we moved back to the UK.
Cats don't need taking for walks and they can be left on their own. If you go on holiday you don't have to worry about finding somewhere for the cat to stay you can leave it at home with someone popping round to feed it etc. |

My cat died recently but as someone else said, they instinctively know when you are down. I went through a family bereavement just before my cat died and she never usually sat with me (ever) but she must have known something was wrong and she came over and sat with me for a few hours. It is the best memory I have of her because she wasn't a naturally affectionate cat because being a rescue cat, she was abused by people. So to gain her affections shortly before she died was a huge weight off my shoulders to know that she had died at peace.
My experience with dogs isn't that great. They have only ever bitten me or made me feel scared that they might bite me in the future. Probably because I have childhood trauma from being attacked by a friends dog. |

I could never get a cat, I know they like their independence but if it was out I would constantly worry about it and if it got home safe.

Dogs are pains in the arses. My sister has two long haired border collies. They are annoying. After my aunties funeral we were at my sisters for some food, one of her dogs got in from out back and ran to the window like a loon just cos he saw..whatever. He didn't run right to the window though, no, he junped onto the couch like a loony and banged into me with such force i want flying across the room. (if that happened to my autistic son he'd have a lifelong fear of all dogs)
The same dogs also lay around in wet mud and then come in the house before they shake it off. They also stare my little nephew out when he's trying to eat. Oh aye, and the amount of dog hair they leave around the house is a joke. You can hoover as much as you like, it never gets clean. Oh and dog breath, it's minging. The dogs themselves just smell kinda...ew. I prefer cats. They are way more cool, less needy. Less mental (most of the time). |

You can look at a dog and know exactly what they're thinking. You never know where you are with a cat.

Here are my sisters dogs that are mental. The psycho nutcase one is on the left. I can't tell exactly what he's thinking. Imo he looks rather dodgy. He has the "steer clear!" eyes. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...47461077_n.jpg |

Here's my cat btw. He's really mellow, and is the best pet i've ever had. He "talks" to me all the time too. He also gives cuddles, which is rare in cats i hear.
