But full resolution pics do pull back surprising amounts of detail (almost scary, took a picture of a card mask my son had painted, you can see the weave in the paper).

Pureview mode does give incredibly "clean" looking images, verging on DSLR levels.

And the flash range is excellent - sufficiently strong to illuminate the unlit back garden.

The real test will be sunday evening at a local music festival. I'll be recording the heavier bands in one of the tents ....

Even on the more regular stuff its good (maybe just typical Symbian). Doubling the processor speed and improving the GPU has made a fair difference in gaming.

Only real issue is the keyboard, but I've always tended to prefer a T9 on a single handed touch screen device (very retro of me). Browser problems easily resolved by installing Opera.

Mine has now come through (sharp intake of breath on cost), but so far the camera is exceeding my expectations.

Shame that the weather here sucks, but I'm still intending to try and get some comparison shots between the 808, my aging DSLR (Sony A200, 50mm F1.8 lens), the N8 and my trusty panasonic compact (waterproof, FT1).
hehe yeah, maybe realistic wasn't a choice word.

Let us know how you get on with your tests.

Going to have to get my Flickr account sorted ....

Only comparison I've been able to do so far is in zero light against the N8 to check the flash range. Indecently good, it was bright enough to illuminate an average sized garden in a relatively new build house.

First comment from a colleague (semi pro photographer) this morning is that the screen makes his iPhone 4S look washed out in comparison. Did state that it is relatively low res .... but he didn't care, the screen really does make images "pop".

At £350 it would be worth the cost purely for the cameras ability.

I did a few shots and some video at our local music festival yesterday, primarily recorded some heavy stuff (gargling knives vocals, guitars screaming, etc. etc.)

The audio is superb - it is full range, CD quality, with a good stereo separation where applicable to the subject.

Only uploaded one video so far, one of the reggae acts earlier in the day. Video is very shaky (muddy underfoot, video stabilization wasn't on, my son kept pulling on my hand).

If you listen, do it on some decent full range headphones - the bass really did sound like it does on the video.

Linkage ...

one of the overlooked features of the pureview is the decibel range over which it can record.

I don't want to verify the claimed 140db range, could be dangerous for my health.

I came away slightly deafened from sundays gig, the 808 just took it in its stride.

Wow...! The sound is awesome. I think thats the best sound i've heard on a phone camera. Video is very good as well. Better than all the phone cameras i think.

Some of the stuff I recorded later that day I've recoded as MP3s, and was listening in the car on the way in today.

Sounded just like I was there again .... really indecently good frequency response.

I soooo want this phone but £500 outright would hurt...if only they had it on contract.
Nice clip clonmult...only thing is video stabilisation - it's a bit shaky, does the 808 not have some form of stabilisation?

It does, but wasn't enabled on that video - and my son was dragging at me a fair bit (very muddy).

It gives it 4xlossless zoom when recording HD video.
Ridiculously clean looking 8mp stills (at a level with some DSLRs)

Surely any decent 12MP camera combined with real zoom would be far far better.

Even at only 2X zoom this would equate to 48MP.
Thats assuming 2X halves the width and height.

I'd almost forgotten that Nokia were still making mobile phones!

Back in the 1990s & the 2000s, every one had a Nokia & if by some amazing coincidence they didn't have one, they knew someone who did.

Now, very few people seem to have them & I don't know anyone who has a Nokia, which is the complete opposite to a decade ago.

Nokia: where did it all go wrong?

They messed up the smartphones and got left behind first by Apple and then by Android

You talking about a compact? Sensors are considerably smaller, generate much noisier images. The 808 camera really is *very* good - better than probably most compacts, and gets surprisingly close to DSLRs.

And not sure you've got the calcs right for 2x zoom on a 12mp=48mp. It doesn't work like that ....

It is just one of the new bred of sensors with noise reduction.
Most seem to have it now, including the iPhone.

And £350 would get you 42 x optical zoom these days!
There are some great cameras around these days. None of them are smartphones hybrids.

The lack of noise is primarily down to the size of the sensor, something not possible on the iPhone, or any other phone on the market.

Have you seen the image quality on these big zoom compacts? They're handy - but image quality isn't normally their forte. I've got a 28-300 zoom on my DSLR, and even that isn't too great at the full zoom. That lens cost more than most compacts, and as a result their optics are horrendously compromised.

The 808 is one of the best compact cameras on the market - it happens to also be a fairly good phone. And every single review backs that up - even dpreview made out that its a good camera.

Typical Symbian Belle - very good.

Call quality is excellent, texts let down a little by aspects of the keyboard. The email client is massively better than it was on my N8.

Overall operation is quite slick - transitions are smooth (wish you could switch them off), menus open fast and scroll very smoothly. Install Opera and you get a decent browsing experience.

DLNA works right out of the box, I had it connected up to the PS3 and browsing pictures without any problems.

My only real irritations are a bug with SMS (sometimes fails to send, not a widespread issue) and some of the options that were available on the N8 have been removed.

Considering selling my iPhone for this. Not sure though.

Now if only they'd put a decent sensor in there, it would have been tempting, but the sensor lets it down.

Just gone over to dpreview on their comparison thingy - the 808 has the P510 comprehensively beat on image quality all the way up to ISO 1600.
