My local PBS station is showing Ballykissangel in Doc Martin's timeslot. I am getting into it, so PLEASE, no spoilers!! It is helping with the DM withdrawals.

I LOVED Ballykissangel! I visited the town the last time I was in Ireland and what a thrill to drive over the bridge and have Fitzgeralds right there before me (with the painted blue benches and everything)! Sorry you had to see the spoiler, but what a great show that was.

Finally a bit of insight about how things work around the set of Doc Martin.
Thanks for this dcdmfan. Since I coluldn't get it on my iPad, I took the advice and watched it on my laptop with earphones. Can you imagine how much fun it would be to have Monday Club with Martin each week? What a great way to start the week.

I was reading an article this morning about Martin filming Hometown and was thinking about what a busy summer he must be having. Two movies, the Royal Horse Show, opening the bridle path, Chelsea Flower Show, and who knows what else he has to do as president of the horse society. It made me wonder how he likes acting in these two productions when he has no control. After so many years of he and PB having complete control over the whole DM production, maybe he will rethink ending the series? Unless maybe they are able to put together a new vehicle for him?

Cute! It reminds me of the Islands of Britain video where he passes his cart driving test and shows it to the horse by holding up it's blinder.

Oh my–what advice to give to a first time visitor to England wishing to visit Port Isaac during the filming. I’m sure some of the participants here will have advice based on actual experience during the filming, but here are my thoughts.

The first question that needs to be answered is how comfortable are you driving on the left hand side of the road which, even if supposedly two lane, may only be a total of 15 to 20 feet wide with no shoulder–with big trucks coming the other way. That is what the roads around Port Isaac are, and some are even one lane–but with passing areas. I’ve lived in Britain in the past but even I find the roads a bit of a challenge when I’ve not been there for a while. (Fortunately, automatic transmissions are now easier to obtain from rental companies for a reasonable price so you don’t also have to grapple with a stick shift.) Also, it is mostly a motorway or near motorway from London Heathrow to Bodmin (with one very short stretch of two lane in the Bodmin Moor with, of all things, a stoplight to allow cows to cross.) Driving into Port Isaac harbour is a real challenge but there is a “pay and display” lot at the top of the hill. However, if you have a car, there is wonderful countryside to visit. Keep in mind that petrol is about $8-9 a US gallon.

If you don’t want to use a car, you can get to PI on a bus (or train and bus). The train from London to Bodmin Parkway (where DM picked up his parents) is about 3 or 4 hours and is somewhere around £55 ($80) each way–possibly less round trip. A bus is around £32-40 each way but takes longer. There is a bus every hour from Bodmin Parkway to Wadebridge and a connecting bus every other hour from there to Port Isaac. This would save you the hassle of driving but limits your flexibility once you are there. Getting to PI on the day your plane lands at Heathrow might be very tricky unless the plane lands very early or you plan to stay overnight in Bodmin or somewhere en route.

There are several hotels and bed and breakfasts in or very near Port Isaac. The Slipway Hotel by the harbour runs about £110-190 a night for two–possibly less for one. (All prices here are what I found on the web today.) The Old School Hotel is, by my recollection, somewhat the same in price and it has parking. Apparently it remains open even during filming (the school interior is filmed in Wadebridge) but the parking may disappear. The Bay Hotel, at the top of the hill, starts at £104 and the Headlands Hotel (where Penhale’s party was) is £72-108. Hathaway House, a few yards uphill from the surgery is about £90 for a double. There are a couple other b&bs nearby for about £70–and some very nice ones 3 o4 4 miles away for £70-90 but you need a car or must be a very dedicated walker for them. If you wanted to be there for a week there are self catering cottages (but usually with room for 3 or 4 or more persons) for about £50-100 per night (the closer to Port Isaac, the more expensive). White Rose Cottage (where DM proposed to LG, but which now has a different name) is a self catering cottage. My recollection from last year is that it was about £100 a night during shoulder season–but higher in the summer. Roscarrock Farm, where the barn for interiors and editing is located has self catering cottages, though I don’t know how close they are to PI (or the film barn). Finally, Wadebridge has accommodations that are more reasonable (and probably more likely available) but the last bus leaves Port Isaac at 430pm. I have no idea of what availability or prices will be when filming starts. I am told that the actors and crew live in monthly rented cottages (of which there are quite a few in PI) rather than hotels, b&bs or self-catering cottages. You can probably find out more by a dedicated search on the web.

I would suggest that if you are going, you should book very, very early–and perhaps arrange to go as a small group. If you go, enjoy PI and report back.

More accommodations are listed in this site:

That was fun to watch again and included my favorite scene from The Islands when he rode the horse into the water. Showing the license to the horse and the rosette in the other video just goes to show you what genuine affection he has for all horses (actually, all animals - remember how relieved he was to see some of the rats escape from the Jack Russell Terriers in the Dogs doc?)

On another note, the way he was wearing his hair in this video is my favorite MC hairstyle. That semi-long look with the blonde curls sends me looking for my spoon every time!

Thanks for the great info. After driving on the wrong side of the road (for me) in Italy I would really, really recommend automatic transmissivendor a hire car even if it is a bit more expensive. There is enough to keep track of with navigation, road signs and indicators on the wrong side of the steering column without having to worry about changing gears.

Have Port Isaacs accommodation prices gone up since DM started filming? Do you think they will always stay high now, even when DM finishes filming?

This was supposed to say "automatic transmission for a hire car"

Goodness knows how the iphone "corrected" it to "transmissivendor"!

I thought it must be Australian for transmission! Yes, an automatic was essential for me in England. They are fairly common because so many visitors are not used to driving on the left. When I was there, I kept starting to get in the car on the passenger's side because that's the driver's side here. Then I would realize my mistake and pretend that I needed to put something in there from that side so that nobody thought I was an idiot. I don't think anyone was paying attention to me, but every time I got behind the wheel it was pretty nerve wracking. I purchased the super-deluxe insurance just in case I wrecked the car. They rented me an old clunker of a car and I was happy about that. I did scratch it on the hedges. The rental car guy wasn't too happy when he saw the scratches.

When I lived in Australia and was getting use to the right hand controls and by mistake went to the left side of the car; I'd always announce that I had to check something in the glove compartment.

On the subjects of accents - I know that many times I can't make out what the actors are saying. The one that comes to mind is in S5E1 where the LG and DM are in the shop and the shop keeper mentions that the first months after childbirth are like a mugging. I never could make out the word mugging, but knowing what it is I wonder why I couldn't catch it the first time (or second or third).

mnsnowflake - sorry, i won't post any spoilers. It is a wonderful show and I'm enjoying it and Stephen Thomkinson. He is now doing a show in the UK called DCI Banks and CC is going to be joining the show playing a detective and mother of 4. Should be interesting. I haven't been able to find anything on youtube about it except a few clips and the DVD of the earlier season is not out in the US. Reminds me of the early DM years.

I, too, enjoyed the Islands of Britian documentary he did. His longer blond hair had him look so much younger. I also liked the way he walks in the series, those long strides, which makes me think he was at some point trained as a dancer, but could be wrong about that. The clipped, shorter stride in his DM role visually tells you his personality.

There is a very funny bit on the Alan Titchmarsh interview where he demonstrates the Doc Martin walk and remarks about how hard it is on his muscles to be tensed up like that.

I don't know about dancing, but he is an accomplished musician (guitar player) and singer. There is a lovely clip somewhere from William and Mary of him singing "The Pearl Song" (I think) and it is clear that his voice is trained. I wonder if drama school includes some training in movement?

You are probably correct that drama school includes training in movement.
Ahh, NewPark, all you had to mention was The Pearl Fisher's Song from Bizet's opera The Pearl Fishers. I just fell in love with that piece when I saw the posting here several threads ago. I even went so far as to get the CD of that opera and probably play it at least once a week. The first disc is so beautiful, one piece flows into another. And to think, that MC probably picked that piece to sing a bit of it in William and Mary, Series 3. The background of that particular piece from what I read is that two best friends, (one a tenor and one a baritone) both love the high priestess in Ceylon and decided that if she picks one of them their friendship would not end.

That's one reason I was so happy to get the DVD's. After watching all of the episodes several times on Hulu, which offered subtitles for some, but not all, episodes, and then on some computer files, the first thing I did with the DVD's was turn on subtitles. As I watched all of the eps for the first time on DVD, there was a lot of, "Oh, so that's what they said," going on. BTW, I didn't get that "mugged" word either at first.

Wouldn't that be fun if Caroline Quentin guest starred on Doc Martin, too?! What do you think a fun character would be for her, or Neil Morrisey?

Foreign language Doc Martins

I'm brand new to this forum, so pardon me if it's a repeat topic...Has anyone seen the German or Spanish versions of Doc Martin (Doktor Martin, Doctor Mateo)? I heard MC say on The Graham Norton Show that the Spanish one had overtaken the British series -- they're writing their own scripts. Does anyone know where the plot has gone?

Welcome to the Forum, PoorRichard.

No, I don't think that we really know anything about the Spanish version. There have been German versions floating about on YouTube, which seem to be pretty much line for line, shot for shot, the same as the original. Also a brief glimpse at some point of a Greek version, which all agreed was terrible.

None of the actors portraying MC have his charisma.
