Opinion on Smart TV's?

What does everyone think about Smart Tv's? Having the ability to connect your tv online is a brilliant idea.

With so much on demand content available online, smart tv's have great potential. Even though you can access all this content via a computer or laptop I feel that it's a different experience.

It is possible to connect your laptop and stream it that way but it's just too fiddly and more effort if you've just realised you need to catch up on something which you haven't recorded.

Generally I prefer separate boxes for this kind of thing. For the sake of having to use a second remote control I’d rather be able to replace one component as it becomes obsolete rather than having the whole kit become outdated. Think of all those HD Ready TVs that won’t support freeview HD, TVs with sky built in etc

Separates work for me, though admittedly I'll be keeping my CRT TV running because its sound and picture are to my taste. I get the functionality I want through dongles to my TVOnics and Sony separates.

Mostly though, I'll record and use iPlayer and the other features just as back up as I've only a 10GB monthly usage cap.

I'm with you there. Seeing that games consoles, Blu-ray players and other STBs are providing these type of services I really don't need my TV to as well.

Apart from iPlayer, a total waste of time. Most of the so-called features are just shills for pay services, the free stuff sucks, web pages take ages to load, updates take forever and entering text is a massive PITA.

I'm not too keen on Smart TVs.

Yes and text entry is terrible unless you have an added keyboard.

They are not so Smart.

It's like using a ZX81 to surf the net.

They often load them up with rubbish apps, designed to make money rather than do the job.

They are too clunky.

Processing power should go on video not apps.

I think that the smart tv is a brilliant design. Smart Tv sales has been gradually increasing each quarter. I love the fact that I am not in my room by myself when I need to browse the internet. Instead I am in the living room with my family. Having a notepad connected is a great idea but if you have a remote like the magic motion remote from LG, everything is more convenient.

Smart TVs are interesting with applications they come with. They are similar to smart phones. Like in smart phones you download various programs and install them. Smart TVs have various interesting applications too. Some of them even are same with smart phones such as facebook, skype, twitter apps. Remote controller and wifi connection are other features of smart TVs.

On demand like iPlayer, ITV player and 5 on demand are great.

But do your family share the same view when you commandeer the TV to do a little browsing mid soap / film / documentary ?

Thats one reason (IMHO) why smart TV not suitable/useful ( if at all) on the main TV

For £200 you can attach a discreet PC with 100x the functionality and usability of any smart TV.
