HDMI 3way switch cable advice

About a year ago I bought a 3 in 1switch cable adaptor from currys £ 99 which would not switch automatically from 1 device to another I returned the cable for refund recently I bought a very similar cable from Asda at a much lower price only to find that automatic switching between devices again would not work this time thru different tv and devices again returned to asda for refund Today I bought new one from aldi and once again the cable would not work automatically between 2 devices it would work if i pressed the manual button between devices Can anyone explain why this unit will not work as advertised on the box

These switch boxes normally only switch automatically to the last device switched on, other devices connected need to be switched off/standby.

e.g. If you had SkyHD, Bluray and. PS3 connected and you wanted to view Sky, the Bluray/PS3 would need to be off/standby, to switch to PS3 you'd switch Sky off and switch PS3 on.

Thank you decon1972 for the reply now I understand why none of them worked auto but that makes the wording on the boxes untrue if you have to switch the other devices off then it is not automatically switching if you have to switch something else off I seem to have just wasted money. Thank you anyway for the reply regards David

If you have two items switched on how is it supposed to know which you want to watch?.

Mine 5 way auto selects the last you turned on. You don't have to turn the others off. Turning off the last one on drops back to the previous input. There's a remote but never needed to use it. Three items on it, Sony Blu-ray, Denon DVD and ps3.
